Draw a Long Boi Dragon with him being a slime goo boi. This is a pretty open end commission which I do enjoy doing.

REFERENCES

I had no idea what I was going to do with this commission. If I can be honest, I don't think the way I draw goop or slime is good but the commissioner really seems to like it, so who am I do deny them.

No pressure.

FIRST SKETCH

I didn't want to just have a floating goo boi. I wanted a little story but nothing too deep. So I thought a goo boi in a jar would be cute and fitting.

Thank you Greg, but you are not goo.

After blocking out something, I lowered the opacity of the sketch, added a new layer above and refined those details.

I am not feeling some of the details and I would really like it if he really filled that jar, like if he was all squished in there. The composition feels one sided - It is all over the place.

If it is not clear at this point, I am still very not confident with where I am going with this commission. To the point that I am unsure what to fix to make it better.  I will work it a little more and see if there is anything worth salvaging.

I am liking this version a lot more. I used the liquify tool to move some areas around to address the awkward composition.

FLIPPED THAT CANVAS

Far more personality in the dragon's face and the composition is far more balanced. The face design itself still does not match the Christmas version of the Long Boi.

I HATE THIS SO MUCH, REDRAW TIME.

I really did not like original version of this, the more realistic version did not allow me to capture the goopy-ness and fun side of this idea.

Added a little jar lid. I thought it would be cute, as if he popped out.

Now that I don't want to pull my eyes out. Lets line this shiz.

Needs more goo and slime.

There was nothing overly special with this line art. It is a little thicker then what I would normally draw but I think the thicker line art would be more flattering with the whole slime aesthetic.

The usual.

See a more detailed explanation of this process here!

TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH THIS ONE

So I want to try something different compared to my normal process. In my mind I know what I want to do, but I don't think I can quite describe in words what I want to do without it sounding convoluted. So here are some pictures.

After selecting the area I want to colour with the quick selection tool I use a large air brush and softly colour the inside of the edges (THAT SOUNDS SO CONFUSING - This is a new process to me so I am so sorry. Just look at the pretty picture.)

The areas where the 'slime' would be less translucent I added more colour, like to soft shadows or darker areas.

This is taking a very long time.  ( ☉д⊙)

Okies, this is the part that I have no idea what I am doing. My goal is to make the goop areas look goopy in a stylized way.

EYeballing a lighter colour with a slight hue shift I coloured behind the transparent areas.

Ok, ok , ok I think this working. I kept the colours in the jar more saturated as even though he is a Goo Boi the body is all squished up and light trying to pass through would not disperse the colours as the body above the jar.

I pixel locked the the lineart layer and using dark and saturated colours from the base I colour. The body details that are technically inside the jar, to keep this information clear I used the same colour as the jar line art to colour the body details on the inside.

MAKING THE BODY LOOK AS IF IT WAS IN THE JAR

This step would fall more under the colouring stage of this, but I only just realised that I should do this. I select all the areas that are inside the jar.

Using the Gradient Fill Tool I draw on a new layer. You can also do this with a soft air brush.

I duplicated the Jar colour layer. lowered it's opacity to 50% and using a hard brush I erased areas where the body parts in the jar would be squished up to the jar wall. I took some stylized liberty as I don't want to drown this 'toon' image in too many details.

SHADING?

Adding an new layer above the colours and quite literally bullshit my way with rounded shapes to add a stylized shadow?

I lower the layer opacity and soften the edges with a air brush eraser.

LIGHTING?

Ok, this part I had a better idea of what I was doing.

Woo final stretch! What's left is some small shading on the lid and cast shadows on the jar from the droopy goopy bits.

JAR LID SHADING/LIGHTING

RIM LIGHTING TOUCH UPS

I feel like there could be a little more pop with the lighting. Adding rim lighting around the edge of some surfaces will do this.

Heck yeh! That looks hella goop!

JAR TAG

On another canvas I whipped up a cute little grape logo.

Pasting the graphic on the goo boi arts, I use the free transform tool to manipulate the image to fit the perspective of the tag.

DONE!

Looking back, I really wish I didn't f*ck around as much as I did while making this. I took too long and it was mostly because I was put off by my lack direction.

I definitely got a lot more out of this then some of my other art posts.
