Commission to create a fursona. The animal that the commissioner had in mind was a hippogryph. They had some artistic direction for the the look of their character.

Source: Hippogryph models from 'Ice and Fire'.

The hippogryph pattern was a mixture of the Black Hippogryph and a Red Dev secret Hippogryph. Mostly the the Red Hippogryph.

I forgot to get screen caps of the very first sketches just before this colour test.

I was a fan of this design but it just didn't suit the commissioner - they agreed.

This was the point he was dubbed, B E A K I E. We were still not keen on his colours.

It is really important when creating character reference sheets that you DO NOT use and shading or lighting techniques.

The references should be clear and free of colour contamination for other sources. If shading and lighting are a specific part of the reference add them as separate entity to show them off.

This was a minimalistic reference so nothing overly fancy with the layout.

I included a shaded full version of the character with minimal shading.

This was a pleasant break from some other work. I feel like I kinda phoned in some anatomy on this.

I love the colours.
