This is my single favorite season of any anime ever

The first half is slower and more methodical in carving out it’s characters. But damn it’s so worth it. A beautiful masterpiece of a season.

I believe season 2 (or the Slave arc) was originally intended to be the start of this story, but the manga artist, Makoto Yukimura added the prolonged season (season 1) afterwards; his style of writing involves being patient in connecting with characters for greater emotional and story impact. This is all things you basically have already figure out. You're the first reaction I've seen since season 2 started to compare Askeladd and Einar. I'll say more about this in a couple of episodes. I've been watching anime for about 25 years, and this is one of the most impactful seasons I've seen in a very long time. It was not even halfway through the season that Vinland Saga took over Attack on Titan as my favorite anime.

I am so damn happy!! Arguably one of the best season of any anime I've ever watched and I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that thinks so! The true journey of Thorfinn begins now. Can't wait for next drop, thank you guys! BTW you guys should watch both OP and ED!

Thorfinn was 6 when Thors died. So, at the end of S1 he was 16-17 yrs old. Askeladd = world worn, cynical vs. Einar = innocent, open minded Something to remember Thorfinn attacked Canute, the Prince, one of the Danish Royals, not something that would be easily overlooked. The Producers of Vinland Saga is "Twin Engine" abd the motorcycles are their "logo". Twin Engine has produced anime: Dororo, Hell's Paradise, The Ancient Magus' Bride Season and Golden Kamuy.

You are correct. I believe this takes place 1 and a half years after the prologue.

You would be correct. Yukimura always wanted to write a story about a slave protagonist. The prologue I believe was planned initially to be cut up into flashbacks that would only show the important details. It’s so interesting that originally Einar would’ve been the first character we’re introduced to and THIS would’ve been Thorfinn’s introduction. Then Yukimura’s editor said “why don’t you write a prologue instead?” And then Yukimura cooked up one of the best prologues in manga.

This is an important thing to consider. Thorfinn attacked the king and the last we saw him being dragged off. Keeping that context it becomes easy to connect the dots.
