Always in for "something" for chapters/episodes named "Turning Point"

"I don't think anyone's going to die" - Famous last words

When Rudy was creating that purple fireball, he actually modeled it after a nuclear explosion (since he knew what those were from his past life). It was the most powerful image he could picture to mold the spell after - and you can see that it was searing the rocks from the heat it produced. This is part of the incantationless casting; since he's not limited by the incantation, he can modify the power or effect of his casting according to his mental image of the spell. So he pictured the most powerful version of a fireball he could think of in an attempt to kill Orsted - a nuclear explosion.

Holy fuck that discussion length haha. Gonna save it for some home reparations

That was quite the thorough and lengthy discussion! As always, very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Violet fire burning at 40000K, pretty hot stuff (surface of the sun temp is around 5800K)

Hey mods! I have a quick non-spoiler answer for AutoSave as to why Rudy can't use incantation-less magic (this is information that was given VERY early in the light novel, and we've long passed this point in the story where Rudy would have explained it in an internal monologue. We will probably never get an in-anime explanation for it). Simple answer: he can't visualize HOW to heal someone. Unlike creating water or fire which have chemical reactions and properties that he can use his past-life knowledge to create, healing instantaneously is NOT something that existed and he can't understand how that would work. In ep1, we learned that Rudy learned how to create a water ball by visualizing the construction of water and then expel it from his hand through speed/velocity. Healing magic is just way more complicated for Rudy to understand, so he uses incantations to ignore the visualization process that incantation-less magic needs.

MT's lore is always amazing, but it's not really something that needs to be explained beyond the anime unless you really want to know. Though if you do, it's worth noting that it also seems implied that understanding healing magic is much more about emotion and empathy, which are traits that Rudy lacks; especially shown here with his lack of understanding social cues regarding Orsted.

I've been waiting for this episode for so long, it's one of my favourite episodes of recent anime and yet the magic of MT isn't in it's singular episodes, but the overarching journey. What always surprises me is peoples (both reactors and just random commenters) reaction to how Rudy acts in this episode, I think it's completely consistant with his character and makes full sense even ignoring that the Man-God didn't say anything. Rudy is the most socially adept person in the party and handles the talking in every instance, Orsted spoke and clearly wasn't being actively hostile towards them, he had a lot of information despite Eris and Ruijerd not knowing who he is and them not knowing only confirms that Orsted isn't an active threat. Even when Rudy says and does things that could be suspicious he just brushes it off until Rudy mentions the mana disaster and he isn't affected by the curse so there's absolutely no reason for Rudy to see him as some "scary suspicious stranger". Going by Ruijerd/Eris' reactions still doesn't mean he wouldn't try to get information because that's his role in the group and many of the previous interactions in past wouldn't happen if he just went with what those two thought at the time. People just have meta info from the past 20 episodes, the start of this one, the deep suspenseful music and framing of shots that Rudy simply doesn't have, yet they judge his actions based on their own knowledge as a viewer. I felt so heard when Ben said something similar because it's almost exactly the same as i've said to people before. As for saying about the man-god, yeah that's a big fuckup, but it also makes complete sense to me, he's been holding his experiences with them in for more than a year and a half at this point and someone with a lot of information came along and he finally got a lead, he let his guard down in his excitement/surprise and I can't blame him.

This. He used a basic tier fireball spell but pumped so much mana into it that he ended up making an imperial tier spell

I always took it that one of Orsted's curses made it so nobody could lie to him.

Nakirium

yeah, i mostly brought it up because the two of them have been asking this question every time they see Rudy cast healing magic on screen so I figured it’d be best to explain so they won’t be left in the dark about it

I believe this event was really soul-crushing for Eris. Like, she's always going on about how great Rudeus is and how he can just handle all the problems thrown at them. When someone praises Rudeus (like Aisha did in the previous episode), she gets so happy and feels proud. It makes sense why she thinks Rudeus is amazing and why she thinks he can do anything because he's always the one who's always handling everything for the party, the one resolving the conflicts in the party and the one always taking charge. I'm sure in all that admiration for Rudeus, no doubt she's trying been her hardest to be on his level as well, especially if you were to take a look a few episodes back when they dueled in episode 11 where Rudeus got his demon eye. When she lost the bout with Rudeus, she was upset that she couldn't be better at Rudeus in something she excels best at. I'm sure that was crushing for her, and ever since then she's been trying her dang hardest to try and improve her swordsmanship day by day to just keep up and not be left behind. In this episode, we can see that compared to her bout with Ruijerd in the demon continent, she's improved considerably where she has much faster reflexes and is able to counter Ruijerd's attacks coming at her. But then came the Dragon God. She wasn't even able to land a hit on him compared to Ruijerd and Rudeus. That says a lot and im sure it destroyed her ego and self-esteem as a warrior. When she saw Rudeus get his heart ripped out, it even took her a moment to realize that that really just happened. It seemed she couldn't fathom him even dying right as he just fell immediately and lifelessly in front of her, but that was the reality of what was happening. Like, it really has to be traumatizing to see someone you admire so much get killed right in front of you and you couldn't do anything but watch. To her, it was really gonna be the end of her everything if she lost Rudeus. If anything, I believed this episode damaged Eris the most out of their whole party.

His behavior with Orsted isn't an issue with social cues, he has good reason to act the way he does but it's unfortunately not something brief or significant enough for the anime to dedicate time to. It has to do with the lessons he took away from the Paul incident and trying to do better in gathering information. Today's lesson is damned if you do, damned if you don't lol.
