Majority of people recommend to not bother with the flashing text.

It's not that you should not bother with it, but that you should try to read it and take in what you can while it's playing but not worry too much about going back... aside from specific parts if you miss it and want more characterization. There's parts later in the series that add pretty heavily to the story if you are so invested but MOST of the time if you're supposed to read the whole thing, the show will give you enough time to read it.
