I'm glad you two brought up the contrast in philosophies between Jerome and Ernst. Jerome's whole speech was about how right and wrong is based on the good of the nation, and therefore whatever benefits San Magnolia is right, even if it means wiping out the 86. Ernst has the completely opposite viewpoint, which is that there is objective morality, and any nation that doesn't hold to that is better off gone. I immediately found him an interesting character because even though he's the provisional president, his view is "I know what's right, and I don't care if the nation wants otherwise lol"

San Magnolia lost contact with other nations just like Giad. In the history lesson in one of the early episodes it was assumed that Giad was destroyed by the Legion, but it's nothing but an assumption - San Magnolia's leadership is likely planning for the possibility that this is not the case when they decided to wipe out the 86. After all, if they're surviving, why wouldn't other countries?

It seems to me more like Jerome is beholden to the will of the people despite his personal feelings, while Ernst is using the Federacy to enforce his ideals, regardless of any criticism from it's higher ups.
