If Frieren wasn't there for test 2, the end boss would be Denken or Sense's clone. Sense's clone got one-shotted, and we never saw Denken's clone, but we can assume it'd be easier

Alex Glyman

I gotta agree with Aaron. While Denken would indeed be a formidable enemy, I don't think that he's that insurmountable of a foe like Frieren is. And as we saw before, Sense, while obviously devastating to some of the mages, was going to fall to Ubel one way or another.

I agree, I don’t know if he was overconfident, but it seemed like Wirbel’s team was at least able to hold Denken off. If he had more resources(potentially an additional test taker) I feel they had a good shot

I adore this episode so much. It's an excellent execution of what are the same spirit behind all best moments of the show for me. The connections between people that don't mesh but still care, nostalgic or regretful sentimentality, time and the mutual exchange between generations. The battles are awesome but by far the best part of the show is character, even in the action moments. Great discussion, and there are a quite a few things said in this with Ben popping off in a great way that I think he'll be over the moon with Violet Evergarden when the channel gets around to it. Sorry, it's my favorite piece of fiction, period, and I have to shill it at every opportunity

Oddly, my favorite moment in this episode is Fern’s immediate and matter of fact response to Serie, “What? No.”

Daniel

We very briefly got a single shot of Denken's clone facing off against Wirbel and his 2 teammates, and like Wirbel said earlier, "I know how to win."

Btw "Falsch", the name of the mage with glasses is the German word for "wrong" (it can also mean fake or deceitful). They could have simply named him like that because he is wrong about Frieren, not noticing that she suppressed her mana, but when Lernen says that Frieren's mana is equal to Serie's, Serie laughs and says "Falsch, did you notice?". Its like she answers "wrong" to what Lernen says. Not sure if that was intentional but I thought it was funny.

If frieren and fern werent' there in the second exam, I think the same amount would pass because the only thing that made that exam hard was Frieren's presence, if Frieren wasn't present then her clone won't either and the biggest obstacle would be Denken and Sense's clones and we already know Ubel can kill the Sense clone easily and Denken can definetly figure out a way to handle his clone so the exam would've probably ended waay quicker lol

Isulia

if the exam plays out the same except sense's clone is the final boss instead of frieren, then I think they would fare worse. everyone is pointing out how ubel hard counters sense, but not that ubel and land took their sweet time getting to the bottom. in the actual show by the time they meet up with denken, the rest of the group has already started enacting their plan. I think if they try to fight sense as a group without ubel there would definitely be people who are forced to forfeit

I love how Fern couldn't say that Frieren was her teacher to Richter because she was so angry with her, but after seeing how thoughtful and caring Frieren is, she proudly stated "I am Ms. Frieren's Student" to Serie, even if it meant she might not pass the exam. What a great series!

Fern: "I already have an elf"

There is actually one shot in one of the final fight montages where you can see a group is about to fight Denken's clone. The clone is using the spell that creates the three light swords appear in front of him. It cuts off before we see anything beyond that, though.

It's quite difficult to asses how the groups dynamics would've played out without Frieren, so I'm gonna trust Serie's intuition and say that fewer people would've passed if Frieren wasn't there

Zac Childs

I love hearing "Frieren is relatively unskilled for her age" right after the insanity of the second test.

I agree, in the sense that Sense's intention was a test that wasn't as impassible as defeating clone-frieren. However, the narrative was that everyone outside of Frieren & Fern vs. clone-frieren was losing. Even though *Denken* was wise enough to pass the test under those conditions, that doesn't mean he would've been able to convince everyone

Neutr0n

Every fight other than the Frieren one was losing, though, right?

Regarding Ben's question about how things would turn out if Frieren was not there, I think Denken would be the person to gather around at the end anyway. One thing that forces people to fight against each other at the end is Frieren's barrier. As far as the story shows, no one is able to cast a heavy duty barrier, so rushing in to break the door and destroy the Spiegel would be a more viable solution with all the knowledge they would have. But there is also the possibility that the time limit is what prevents the success because of the respawn. So if they waste too much time fighting their copies on the way down, they will fail. On success, I think that there would be less people at the end anyway. One thing that I really like in this episode is the implication of the flower spell from Frieren point of view. We know that Serie is more about magic for fighting, and she warns Frieren about magic to be used for war and that she would be killed either by the demon king or a human. But Frieren magic is more about utility and social aspects. Most good she does while she wanders around the world is helping people with magic that move things, clean things, and so on. At war time her magic is able to gather people and support them. And at peace time she still has motive help around, learn new things and ways of thinking magic. In a way, her philosophy on magic changes the world. This is what Flamme's wish was.

Fern struggles to reply or stays silent in the first half of the episode when Richter asks her are you Frieren's student. She tells Stark Frieren doesn't under her at all and the episode ends with her looking at Serie and proudly state - I am Frieren's student.

Kaushal Banninthaya

Himmel grew up in a time where magic was weapon in the war against demons. Like Flamme and Serie and many others. Himmel says it's the first time I thought of magic as beautiful. I like to think this what inspired him to become the Hero when he grows up and enabled him to visualize a world without DK and full of beautiful magic.

Sylphis Farheit

It is an interesting interpretation. Also, they are all talking about fluctuation, but there is no proper indication on if they could only estimate or really measure the maximal value. So it could be wrong in multiple ways and we don't know about the suppression ratio either. Finally, Serie takes a lot of time praising (in her way) Frieren dedication to mana suppression. But when we learn that Serie supresses her mana too, it takes the explanation to another level. Serie has enough mana to both threatens demons (any mage in fact) for them to not attack her and has probably a lot to spare for them to still miscalculate if a very strong demon shows up or if they gang up against her. This is also showing a difference in their philosophy. Serie enforces her position with power display, while Frieren does not want to.

Fang

I can't believe after the many times I've rewatched this episode I never picked up on that

The Lorax

As we'll see next episode, Serie walks back her comment on there being too many who passed. It seems like she might have been under the impression that Frieren was literally carrying people through the second test when in reality she was on her own with Fern and Sense for most of it and everyone else made it to the bottom on their own. Then the main threats in the dungeon would be Sense Clone, who would probably be guarding the door, and Denken Clone, who would be roaming. The one issue I can see arising is that Ubel is the only one who could confidently take down Sense solo and she and Land were taking their time to get down there, so people might have rushed and lost (though if the entire Denken Squad took it on they would probably win imo) Kanne and Lawine definitely wouldn't have made it to the second round without Frieren but other than that she really didn't help anyone else. Also, she seems harsh but I don't disagree with any of her current assessments we saw this episode. None of them seemed like they were ready to be first class mages.

Ignoring other comments, I have to say that Fern and the log of a staff are meant to be. Don't try to deny it

L.C.

In all honesty I couldn't care less about how powerful the characters are. Serie being super strong to no surprise and the rankings of them was the least important things to me in this section. I find the importance of the staff with fern and Frieren thinking back on why she was chosen by Himmel to be way higher. I am tired of a bunch of typical shonen action power scaling talk. I get the importance to the story and characters but being able to focus on the more meaningful things in an anime that aren't "who is more powerful than the other" is so amazing and soothing to me. The things that people brush off in this series while being too focused on powers and fights are by far the most important moments in my eyes.
