It’s crying time. This episode wrecked me from the writing, ost, animation to voice acting it was just incredible

I love this show so much… I don’t understand why it’s so underrated it hits so many feelings that most anime’s cannot… and it never falls off… the story, directing and sound design are god level… there’s even anime only moments in the future not in the manga that are so beautiful and epic and complement the original work so seamlessly … adding even more layers of emotions I didn’t even know I needed🤣😂🙃😜

Flawless direction? ✅ Amazing soundtrack/sound design? ✅ Multiple phenomenal character moments? ✅ Emotional devastation? ✅ Yeah, this is the best episode of cour 1 for sure… but cour 2 has one of my all time favorite episodes in anything ever (anime or otherwise). It just goes well beyond 10/10 for me. Super looking forward to it 😁

Hiroyuki Sawano is the composer for 86, and he did the first 3 season of AOT as well.

The meaning of the red flower makes Raiden's line about viewing it on the battlefield, hit even harder. The meaning fo the flower is rebirth and renewal, but are most commonly associated with death. Red spider lilies are frequently depicted in mythology as a symbol of reincarnation, so they can also represent life after death or transformation. Which is a very well suited representation for every character this episode and going forward.

I'm sure other people have mentioned this before, but the music/score was composed by Hiroyuki Sawano AND Kohta Yamamoto, the former having composed Attack on Titan seasons 1-3 scores and the latter having done season 4 onwards. Hiroyuki Sawano was also the composer for the 2 outro songs "Avid" & "Hands up to the sky". So Ben praising 86's music and comparing it with AoT's music is very perceptive of him and totally valid cuz, well, they both have the same composers lol

And the often forgotten Kohta Yamamoto (afaik he worked on AOT as well). They did about 50:50 for 86. I read an interview with them, where they say that Sawano worked mostly on battle music and themes that play on Shin's side while Yamamoto worked on the OST on Lena's side and they were pretty much told to each do their own thing because of how different the settings are. But they still ended up using the OST from Yamamoto on Shin's side too and vice versa, so its not clearly separated. The track that played at the end of this episode was by Yamamoto and its one of my favorite non vocal pieces. Avid (Sawano) is still my favorite overall, though :).

It's worth mentioning I think that the first 11 episodes, barring some anime-only stuff and some stuff pulled from later volumes, adapted from the first volume of the light novels. It was originally a standalone work that was turned into a series later, which worked out really well in my opinion, but if things end up feeling like it could have been left one cour and it would have been amazing already, well, that's because it could have.

My second favorite episode of the show and one my favorites scenes , Lena manipulating Annette in the rain. Stupidly well directed. A masterpiece. Also the birth of "bad girl Lena". No more the naive rookie "do all by the book" Lena. The come to reality in the last episode makes her change. And like a "broken record", the OST is masterful.

When Lena starts running, this is a callback to when Shin mentioned there is a spot in the city you can go that will make them sound clearer or have a better signal. She was running to try and get to that point so she could hear every word until the last moment they went out of range. Also, I have to add since this is my second favorite military themed anime, 86 is superb. Buckle up though, you guys haven't seen nothing yet!

Truly an absolute masterpiece of an episode. Everything just kinda blended in so well with each other. Some small details I loved were Rei's yells for shin in the background during the beginning, how Rena ran through the town to try to keep the signal together for as long as possible, and even the fact that the enemy kinda dispersed once the shepherd died. And man, Rei's slap scene hit so hard especially the "I'll protect him!" bit. It's like the instinct of being an older brother is overtaking the machines orders of killing. And that goo stuff, think I remember it being nanotechnology. Fancy stuff.

I've been looking forward to this episode's discussion SO MUCH. Easily one of my favorite episodes of any serialized media, ever - beaten out only by very few things (including another episode of 86!). The direction and the editing are absolutely masterful. Every single time I watch the sequence of Lena racing through the city, desperately trying to keep the Spearhead squadron within reach of the para raid even just a tiny bit longer, I am reduced to a sobbing, blubbering mess. I love it so much.

I just want to say that, even among other reactors that do a good job of really delving into shows, you two are the only ones who were able to catch almost every little thing I caught, and more, and to understand and express almost everything I FEEL about this episode. There is no higher compliment I can give. 86 is a masterclass, and just about everything it's set up came to a head here. Now, onward we go. Oh, and I think I can share this nugget of insight that absolutely rocked me when it occurred to me, almost a year after finishing the series: Shin's feelings toward Rei? The knowledge, or belief, that Rei's fate was his fault, and that Rei hated him - that Rei died hating him? Annette felt the same way about Shin. Shin is Annette's Rei.

I absolute love this series. One of my favorite episodes! Lena has truly grown into her own, and the parallels of Shin and Lena's crying (one in closure, one in grief) make it a standout episode! This show is criminally underrated. It should be as talked about as AoT, but it isn't!

The Red Spider Lilies! Every time I see that flower in an anime, you know something tragic is about to happen.

CINEMA! Sawano and Yamamoto absolutely cooked this episode.
