It's implied that LinLin ate the orphans and Mother Carmel, which is why she gained Mother Carmel's devil fruit ability, because APPARENTLY IF YOU EAT A DEVIL FRUIT USER YOU GET THEIR POWERS. I really enjoyed the subtlety of how they handled this, easily one of the darkest moments in the series. As for the Tamate Box, it was a royal treasure from the kingdom of fishman island, and all the treasure was given to the Straw Hats, and Luffy gave all the treasure to Big Mom's subordinates in exchange for him eating all the candies from the fishman island factory. Some of the royal aids informed the King Neptune (Shirahoshi's father) that they actually switched out the treasure in the Tamate Box for explosives to deter thieves, but by that point it was already on it's way to Big Mom, so the anxiety of that was the Straw Hats were giving her a sort of 'peace offering', unknowingly filled with explosives many many episodes ago.
