Ruff said "The last thing you want is a mutiny among fire benders" I'ma argue the LAST thing you want is a mutiny among water benders, given the fact that they're on the open ocean

By the way Aang has his tats before they tell him he's the avatar, meaning he was already considered a master of the element, gyatso took out several fire benders with him, Aang genuinely could have survived the massacre, especially given he'd most likely have entered the avatar state if not to protect himself to protect the kthers

It's still very unlikely; he had no firebending training *at all* at that point, and you have to remember that the Fire Nation soldiers were all boosted by the comet. The Avatar State is no guarantee of success at all: hence what happened at the end of Book Two. And he had considerably more experience and training at that point than a century prior.
