This animation took all day so I thought I'd share how I did it.

Perhaps you already know this, but the issue at 3:50 is caused by the spatial interpretation of the keyframes. You can either set it to linear on individual keyframes in the "Keyframe Interpolation" menu, or set the default to linear for all keyframes in the Preferences -> General menu.

Yup. The animations have a decent amount of easing, so I simply hacked the solution, as you saw :D The great thing about making these videos is I almost never have to go back and re-edit them!

Love seeing this, but MAN...I don't have time in my day to devote to such detailed animations. I realize this is a very poor substitute, but I'd be tempted to shortcut the process by just getting the before-JPG, the after-JPG, and crossfading between them. Nowhere near as elegant, I know. I always appreciate the attention to detail in your videos.

Yeah, you can do that but it's all in the transition. Seeing how the far the durations all have to move, etc. FWIW, I normally avoid these kinds of horrific time drain animations. Normally, I'll permit a maximum of 3 per video :D

Notation isn't evil, the problem is that music is moving faster than our efforts to document it, even if it's only in equal temperament. How well do alphabets track language? Mostly pretty well, but there's a lot of special diacritics when Latin alphabets are used for a language like Vietnamese. The Latin alphabet has 26 characters, down from 29 or 30 a few centuries back. We should count ourselves lucky that music notation only has A to G. Can you imaging what music would look like with articulations to indicate wah pedals, fuzz, phasers, flangers, and reverb? "And this section is Jimi Hendrix..."

I make Tetris analysis videos where I have to hand animate a bunch of elements showing alternate piece placements and board states to what actually happened in a game, so I completely understand your pain on this! The end result is terrific.

It seems there’s a market for a specialised animation centric video editing platform. 3Blue1Brown developed a Python library (Manim) to animate graphics explaining mathematical phenomena. Would something similar be possible for more general animations?
