Hello everyone,

I thought I'd provide a quick update to let you know how things are going.

First, about my current video: apart from some grading work and sound mixing, it is complete. I'll be posting it on Patreon next week - a few weeks before I post it on YouTube. It's 47 minutes long, so quite meaty and I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Second, I am deep into a new script on the topic of notation - and how it always seems to be under attack. In particular, I look at the numerous times various technologists have derided notation as 'inefficient' and inspect their claims that notation is the reason why people give up learning an instrument.

A substantial part of the video involves a dive into reforms and alternative notation systems that have been proposed over the last 20 years, as well as quite a few really weird (and also ingenious) ones that have been proposed over the last 300 years (IMO, the best stuff happened during the 19th century). Bitching about notation is not a new phenomenon. If anything, we're currently experiencing a quiet period right now...

Of course, I give some special love to a variety of crappy learning apps that claim to replace notation outright (for a 'small' subscription fee) but are demonstrably useless. I also give a well-earned kick to a few loud mouths whose arguments have nothing to do with notation but seem to be founded on nothing more than a vague dislike of classical music because... aristocracy or something.

Apart from that, I'll be delving a little bit into ancient greek notation, Gregorian / plainchant neumes and I'll also spend much more time than you'd reasonably expect discussing chess and dentistry.

---

Bonus: I'll also be appearing on Linus Boman's channel once he passes 100K in a few weeks. The video is a chat between the two of us about how we work and how we balance our family lives with our YouTube lives. You may or may not like it... and THAT'S A PROMISE!

(Coming from a tech background...) Basically music notation is a grid system. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just a system that has evolved throughout the centuries. In electronics and mathematics, charts are common, very common. And music notation is just another chart. There is nothing elitist about writing something down, unless of course one views writing itself as elitist. BTW, (typo alert) it looks like it's Linus Boman, not Bowman. (Yeah, and I keep typing Linux instead of Linus).
