Hail all!  Doomcock here with a little more about the topic I brought up earlier.

So, I mentioned in the last Rumblings podcast that I was going to get more secure regarding the Discord server.  This has some of you upset, as I thought it might, and so here are my thoughts regarding this:

I'm open to discussing this.  Perhaps I could have a few trusted mods who will promise to go through and police it every day?  Delete anything inappropriate?  Let's discuss this next time.  I think at this point, I will be content with deleting this one, then immediately starting up a new one, so that the old links that have been around forever won't work anymore.  I absolutely do not want anyone posting there who is not part of the Lair.  There are a few people who bailed on their support, not out of hardship but just because, and I don't think its fair to others who are still part of our community.

Anyway, I'm thinking whatever new server I start up can hang around for a while.  Maybe I'll delete and start a new one every few weeks, always posting the new link on Patreon?  So it'll be available, but not for anyone not authorized to be there.  Needless to say, do NOT give it out to anyone who can't retrieve it for themselves.  That's important.  So, what do you guys think about this?  Does this seem better?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Okay this is weird. The message I sent you was without any knowledge you were already thinking along the same lines. My offer still stands tho as it’s nothing I’m not accustomed to and paid quite well for in my daily life. :p no need to delete the server yet (I think, based on a quick knowledge base search)

Ok, so I'm VERY new to the lair, so in my own mind, my opinion counts less than the folks who've been here for the long haul, but I've got a big mouth, so... If you're providing the Discord, then it's your right to see it run how you see fit. If you're intention is to provide it for the sole benefit of the patrons, then it shouldn't even be a discussion. "Your house, your rules," so to speak. My two cents. If I'm off base, I'm sure someone will let me know.

If someone wants to be a moderator, then by all means leave up a public Xanadoom discord, but I don't think you should be obliged to maintain it or frequent it. The future ruler of the Earth already seems to be plenty busy!

So for this I'd say if you'd like you can create the new server, and I'd recommend having maybe trusted legionnaires who would moderate your server my overlord. As well as a set of ground rules laid down by yourself that way everyone knows and the mods know specifically what you want enforced on the server. That's my two cents

I would both get moderators and make a new one each month. Taking it down constantly would be a negative in my mind because it sometimes get active between events, but if people being on there that shouldn't be is a concern, then a monthly refresh should be sufficient

Just an addendum, Patreon and Discord hace link ability so only people who are actively subscribed to Patreon can access the Discord. The next question would be how to handle exceptions. Trust me my lord, I do this literally everyday for clients whom I’m obliged to sign NDAs for. :p

Starting a new one with tighter controls is a good idea, however I think that the old one could possibly be turned over ENTIRELY to the Community. You get to wash your hands of the responsibility and we get to keep a mostly free place to hang out with each other. We could also make a new fan chat channel from scratch too.

I agree with what several others have said. As the head dog it's probably too much to focus on the amount of attention keeping a discord clean and properly moderated on your own. If you want to do a permanent discord I think your best bet it to have it largely run by a staff of legionnaires who you can trust for day to day order so you only need to check in from time to time. It's really a lot like the good old days of message boards and BBS communities. But there also isn't really any issue with making a new discord for each event either I suppose. It's whatever you feel fits the purpose and works for you the best my lord.

VERY reasonable of you to post this after that surprise Rumblings upload earlier today, Overlord. Reading your new post, it makes your rationale to delete your Discord server each time more logical than in the Rumblings podcast. Sounds like there are at least 2 pressing concerns here, non-approved attendance and Discord posts of a... questionable nature that might seek to undermine you and your channel. Discussing this on the next Discord gathering seems like a good idea, just like the possibility of Moderators policing in the name of Doomcock. You must do what you feel is right, of course...

I like this idea of the old one being turned over to the Community OR, as you also said, there could be a brand-new one by fans for fans

I think you should start a new one and I think your most trusted legionnaires should be moderators.

Security through obscurity never works for very long. It's too bad Patreon doesn't have some sort of plugin mechanism so outside sites could authenticate Patreon donors.

Do what’s necessary to protect the Lair and your brand, Lord Doomcock

I am sure I am not alone in saying that new or not your voice is just as valued. Ave.

I'm not sure what all the hubbub is about, but I am bummed that our favorite Phallocrat lost some support due to complications with that stupid platform. That's totally fucked up. He needs things simplified, and it doesn't seem like there is much out there to facilitate that. I blame Mikey Spock.

Whatever needs be done to protect the lair!

MalcolmS

They DO. I literally deal with systems like this everyday for work. :p

Burn it all down 🔥🔥🔥 Overload!! We will dance and sing by the light of the flames 🍻🥂💃🕺

I'd be happy to help you moderate the server, my lord

P.H. Vale

You need a team of moderators, people you trust. It's possible to link the discord to patreon. Several places I'm on do this. If you're not a patreon supporter, you can't get in. If you stop being one, you're off the discord.

Linking the Discord to subscribers is a good idea! Didn't think that was possible...Plus a handful of trusted Legionnaires to police adds another level of security - Make it so, Overlord!
