1992 is my year too Lo - "most important year in kpop music" 😭

Nakia Smith

Psy was from YG. Without Big Bang and Psy who knows what YG would be right now.

REECE

They said why Seo Taji and Boys disbanded it wasn't because of lack of money aren't anything, you guys were talking over the video when they said it, they disbanded because they had to go do their mandatory military service

The fact that Seo Tajji invited BTS to perform with him on his 25th anniversary concert back in 2017 was a huge thing since he's considered a legend in SK. He acknowledged them as his musical successors for the thematic similarities to his music. He's considered one of the first forerunners of (k)pop music that criticized the SK government and adressed societal ills. BTS got to remake his song 'Come Back Home' which is WHY I requested you so many times to react to their live performance 'Come Back Home + No More Dream + Mic Drop' at the 4th Muster. It's iconic.

If you want a more in depth “History of Kpop” then I highly recommend the YouTube Originals series called K-Pop evolution. It is 7 episodes long but it is incredible. It takes you through the beginning of kpop, has interviews with famous kpop idols, producers, record label CEO’s and more. It shows you idol life, a record label choosing idols, shows you a behind the scenes of kang Daniels life as an idol, shows you the making of a music video with everglow and so much more. It is and incredible series. Here is a link to episode 1 https://youtu.be/HerU6Gzn_O4 Also…speaking of Taemin. I highly recommend the video called The Artist: Taemin. It’s an amazing video discussing how he became an idol, his work ethic, his dancing, and has professional opinions etc. It is incredible as well. https://youtu.be/m2_MVBxmdyc

Thanky you so much for your reaction, I hope you can react to some old kpop groups especially Bigbang.

Hilary Angouing

Now I need y’all to react to Seo taiji’s “classroom idea” performance with BTS

Anonymous

this was a great overview for only 20 mins, I don't think they glossed over anything or had a biased opinion on anything. im actually so grateful they went into detail on 1st and 2nd gen bc thats where it all started. most people watching already know about bts and blackpink so theres no need to go into detail on them in my opinion. this was about kpop history not the present

Anonymous

yall should check out more 2nd gen like Sistar (Hyolyn is from this group), KARA (the group with the hips lol), 4minute (HyunA is from this group), Girls Generation, MIssA, BigBang, more SHINee and 2NE1...also some early 3rd gen groups like VIXX, AOA, Exid just to name a few

Jenn Diaz

REGGAETON...... listen, if I get a BTSxDaddyYankee or Bad Bunny collab, my Latina heart will lose it!!

About BTS working with US producers, it made me think about that video where DJ Swivel shows his process on working with BTS on the song Euphoria, which he co-wrote and produced. He worked with BTS along with many other artists like Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kanye West. I found it so interesting to watch, so just putting it out there. https://youtu.be/NqM1shar6O4 And I agree, if BTS gotta do a collab, I'd prefer something that sounds like them rather than the other way around. I think they are in the position now where they can chose their own terms since so many artists want to reach them.

Sugieb

The side eyes y’all gave lol but yea most of the 90s groups were complete copies of Black American girl and boy groups

keiran

I have a question can y’all hear when You talk like no disrespect but I’m curious

Lady G

y'all missed so much talking over it.😂😂 nah but the reaction was great.

Missy has worked with g-dragon before. Teddy Riley has written for kpop. He wrote the debut song for a girl group name rania. They were pretty successful, but the company mishandled them. Most of the members left and the group was rebranded as bp rania who had the first black idol named Alex Reid. Of course the company did not take care of them well. So they disbanded and made a girl group called blackswan who had the first African idol name fatou and the first Brazilian idol. They are adding more members and they might have the first Indian idol as well. They are trying trying to be a global idol group, but with the companies tract record of mishandling their groups idk what the future holds for blackswan.

For the most part yeah , some vids we actually pause and go back but our memory cards get full fast and we don’t want to waste time with the edit

Ivory Cooper

This is the preferred video because of the difference in expertise you have. People can always complain, but you know significantly less about the subject of KPop

Anonymous

Thanks for the conversation 👍🏼 I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on it. I think there’s definitely a lot of stuff that was glossed over, but it was only 20 minutes long, and it was not meant to be an in-depth history documentary. There is a pretty interesting 2 part documentary from Arirang about Korean hip-hop (https://youtu.be/jrUBq0zbJP8) and one of the things I learned from it, is that one of the ways hip hop came to SK was actually through the US military radio stations, that’s why you’d hear it in Itaewon. Also from Korean Americans bringing it back to SK.

The post reaction discussions are my favorite part of ya'll content. I appreciate that I can watch and listen to ya'll and see that we actually share similar opinions or are well versed in music as a whole. The non-genre specific knowledge being added into these discussions is so refreshing. I can say in regards to K-POP that my catalog isn't as broad when it comes to being a dedicated listener to various artists, but I am glad to be on this journey with ya'll. & Yes Lo '92 babies ! :) Love ya'll and keep up the good work !!! :) BTW RM loves Drake too lol if BTS and Drake did a song I think it could be something with a No Guidance feel but not AS sexual lol Maybe something that alludes to it but in a classy way. Grown and sexy lol It would pop out here for sure, idk about SK lol

Nakia Smith

Thanks for recommending this! I really loved watching this documentary. I learned so much. I watched with my sister who isn't even into K-pop and she loved it too. She now has some Rain and CIX on her playlist thanks to me LOL. I hope you have time to watch it, R46!

ARMYnotArmy

I enjoy DKDKTV's videos, the duo of friends are as thorough as they can be and they usually try not to be biased when discussing things. This was just a quick overview of the history of Kpop. David Kim (One of the two who run their channel and business.) had talked about this video when it was released, he stated it was an overview and he understood he was missing a lot of information, but there was honestly too many groups and too much note worthy things to be able to make a video less than 6 hours long if he wanted to deep dive into Korea's music history. From Pansori to Kpop and everything in between would need to be covered, and that could be a whole ass series to be honest lol. So while, yes this could have been more informative- For a 20 min run down... this was very well done. Now, DKDKTV do have some solo videos on those who have had an impact on the music in Korea. From covering some controversial Idols to their recent dive into why G-Dragon is still on top as an influential artist. I believe they also did a Video on Rain as well. Now, about giving credit to those who influenced these groups or the market in general- It's something that people want to talk about, but many are afraid. Because either their favorite artists will be thrown under the bus for not giving credit, or they worry about the toxic people who will point the finger and start a cancel train on some artists. Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone, but there are some artists who don't give credit.. on both sides to be honest. I could and would like to say BTS has always given credit to where they came from, but I'm going to be honest... they didn't always do that. Even they know that though and have touched on that in their first year out. They learned and grew, and changed their style. I can't say the choice to wear the heavy makeup and the clothing choices were not theirs. Back then, that's what was thought would grab people's attention. The guys even admitted they hated it in those days. But they did what they had to. Many Idols are just given orders to do wear and say certain things, so yeah... they don't' give credit. It's easy to blame these idols, but the companies are not exactly innocent. There are many instances where cultural appropreation has been brought up. I obviously can't speak on what groups appropreate black culture, I'm not Black- I'm indigenous/Native American.. so I can't speak on anything but my thoughts of those who keep native/tribal trinkets... and even then, I can't speak fully on it because I've not seen anyone use anything remotely Kanien'keha (Mohawk). And as I've mentioned to some who have asked me- Dreamcatcher doesn't count. Believe it or not... Dreamcatcher is not what Natives call them. That was a name created by the colonizers. And that's all I will say on it, because again, I'm just one. I wasn't raised on the reservation, so those who were, might have differing opinions and might have a problem- My point is, I can't speak on that stuff. But having that talk is needed, we don't talk about it and instead we point fingers and attack each other with the 'yeah but your fav did this'. About Fans being all one sided- That's something that's been happening for years. People like to drag others. I get people wanting to defend artists they care about, I'm pretty sure there's thousands of ARMYs who would throw hands for BTS if need be... but at the same time, we can't sit here and act like Kpop is where all this started. We can't say it's all from America either. Countries influence each other, like it or not they do. Korea has been influenced by China and Japan and the US. It's not a secret, Korea knows that it's been influenced. It's part of the reason why they treasure things that are theirs- Like Hangul, Pansori etc. Things that are them/their country. People can shit on American artists, but it won't ever change the fact that Artists from the US and the UK have influenced many other artists around the world- even today, there are artists, young artists coming up saying their influences are artists like Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendez, Ed Sheeran etc. I will admit I listen to mostly 90's hip hop, and early 2000's along with 80's and 90's rock and metal, and I listen to Kpop... and I also listen to Native music. Watch some Fancy dancers if you wanna talk about powerful dancing. Or Jingle dancers. Sorry, getting off topic. We've been influenced past and present by many people of many lands. So, it kind of does annoy the hell out of me when people are like ' Oh but this , this here is better and what you got there is shit.' Because in truth.. it's all the same, there's a part of this in that, and that in this. I agree that in the hands of certain artists though, they can take those samples or those sounds and make put their own spin on it and it sounds new, sounds different. That's just called progress though. That's not being better/superior, that's just progress. It's also fine to be picky and not like certain things. I'm not a fan of mumble rap, however that doesn't mean I need to go commenting on every mumble rap artists songs saying they sound like crap. I am not a fan of country... again, not one to go commenting and saying dumb crap. If you don't like something, that's fine- just be respectful and understand that it's your opinion and not everyone's. The thing about reactors and branching out, reacting to multiple things. I will never understand people who push for anyone to only ever cover one group, one artists.. etc. I stumbled upon you guys because I was listening to various Kpop songs and looking up reactors and I noticed you guys reacted to BTS, of course that drew in my attention, but I also noticed you were watching other things too. I watched a few, liked the talks and how genuinely interested you were in learning things and.... well not to go all Hobi, but I joined here, and it was the best decision ever. I love the talks like this, even if they make me post essays (like this one). I might not agree with everything, and there are certain songs of other groups I won't comment on because I don't like those songs and all I would comment would be like - cool reaction... peace. I like hearing your thoughts on those songs though. I've said before I'm not into negativity, and I try my best to not post things like that. And I've rambled and got off track... and this comment is probably one of my longest. But thank you guys for showing interest in not just BTS but the world they come from. Another amazing reaction and talk. 💜💜💜

Rachel

Let me correct you, when PSY released Gangnam style he was part of YG, he left in 2018 (I think) and made his own label.

the kpop world is so huge that a 20m video won't cover it for complete...for that we need AT LEAST a 3hrs video ( I am not kiding lol) I am not sure but Jerric ask if BTS sing political songs? or why they don't sing political songs? something like this but they do...at least on their rookies days they did it, remember that BTS music has many layers, normally what you see on the surface is not the whole meaning of the song but we have to dig more in detail on the lyrics, reading books, watch some movies, watch the DKDTV videos to give us more detail about their music ( you know what I mean guys...) overall nice video that summarize kpop history in short time, hope guys you can react one day to BoA's music, is really good, thanks for the reaction and the discusion at the end of every video :D

Anonymous

I think you’re referring to the part where he said “ Drake doesn’t do political songs” , Jerrick was saying BTS is like the Kendrick Lamar of K Pop and Nick said more like Drake because of their commercial success ..

You are really the best 💜💜💜 your comments never disappoint …. I’ve definitely taken some notes and will check out some of the suggestions 🤞🏾

Lala woods

Another great reaction. I really enjoyed your conversations 💜

Great reaction guys I definitely enjoyed your conversations that you had for this one and you should definitely check out more DKDKTV for the breakdown of certain songs cuz they definitely give great breakdowns and your able to understand them more.

Honestly, the lack of homage in kpop is a problem. I'm ARMY and I get upset with 4th gen who don't acknowledge BTS. As far as lack of homage to American artists and hip hop, yes...that is an issue. And a lot of people don't take the time to know music history. And it's bothersome when people don't WANT to know the history. That's what I find frustrating.

Anonymous

No, but...what did Jerrick eat before these latest reactions? He was hilarious. 😂 Anyways, good convos and you definitely need a laugh now and then with heavier topics.

Shaunie Mack

I really do believe BigBang is totally glossed over (in general) for one reason or another, their mark on k-pop is not shallow. They are controversial though, I’m truly interested in what you guy’s impressions of them will be.

Shaunie Mack

G-Dragon actually did make songs with Pharrell and Justin Bieber but to this day fans don’t know why the songs remains in the YG vault.
