Funny I was re-watching the BP netflix documentary in the train earlier today lol. Thank you for the drop today

loved this discussion!! completely agree about the brand image and hype 🤭 btw they do have 1 album out now, would be interesting to here your guys’ discussion on it as well. I do see both sides of it, but I do lean more on the brand image side and can see that they are marketed very well. oh and yg is rumoured to debut a new girl group soon so I guess we’ll find out if yg can produce similar numbers

dulseokbangtan

I love BP but Keith has similar opinions to me, they're good but YG & their brand is def bigger than them and their discography themselves, I wouldn't call them the goats of nothing, 4 years in with 20 songs max. People like BP because they are a breath of fresh air from the bubble gum cutesy aesthetic of most girl groups, it's me, I'm people. IU, Jisoo and Jin are THE Korean beauty standard, idk exactly what it encompasses but they are it based on people's responses to them.

Lala woods

I really feel for Blinks I just saw that it was trending pretty much blinks calling out YG for not letting BP have a comeback. I guess this is their last year? And they still haven’t had a comeback for more than a year so makes me wonder will they renew their contract with YG.

Anonymous

Their contract doesn’t end until 2023 so no they can not leave yet it won’t be til next year that we will know if they decide to resign with yg. Blackpink was actually supposed to debut before 2016 but their debut kept getting pushed. 2NE1 at the time was doing well but one of girls left the group (minzy) and 2NE1 dropped their goodbye song to their fans and disbanded. Now whenever a company labels their brand new girl group as a carbon copy of their other group that won’t sit right with the fans so a lot blackjacks (2NE1 fan base) we’re not happy about them debuting and justifiable since you just experienced your favorite group disband and new group come in to basically replace them. Yg also has this thing we’re they do comebacks at similar time as other of their artists so they don’t compete which could also be why we have yet to receive another comeback for blackpink since their new girl group is rumored to debut this year. Blinks are just frustrated with the company because they aren’t being promoted properly and their not given enough comebacks when the songs are there. Multiple times have the girls said that they have the songs they just need to record them but they don’t let them. And they are perfectly capable of doing their own thing it’s just a matter of the company allowing them. I recommend the blackpink Netflix documentary called “Light up the sky “ Gives a little more insight to them

dulseokbangtan

they would def sink as a group if they left their brand behind at the agency.

Lala woods

Will they have a comeback this year? Do you think they will renew their contracts?

Lala woods

Do you mean that they will leave YG and join another record label ?

Scarcity is just a YG concept in general. There’s a reason the term “YG Dungeon” exists. It’s not just Blackpink. So many times with different YG artists, fans would be waiting and waiting for an album that was supposed to come out that year, and it wasn’t released until the next year. I remember going to a Taeyang solo concert in 2013 and he said his new album would be coming out by the end of the year, and he even played songs from it (it ended up coming out like a year later). It happened with BIGBANG, 2NE1, Lee Hi, now it’s happening with Treasure. As to Blackpink’s immediate popularity, it definitely was all hype. Before debut, they had a dance practice go immediately viral, bc kpop fans had been waiting for YG’s new girl group for years. YG himself had been talking about them since like 2012, so basically 4 years of teasers. And 2NE1 was visibly on the way to disbandment, so YG stans needed something to replace them. That’s not to say those first 2 songs weren’t great, but they definitely had the “Big 3 Advantage.” In regards to contracts, and going solo, you have to remember too that they have the example of 2NE1 right before them. 2NE1 was huge too, and it seemed obvious that they would go big after going solo….but that didn’t happen. So even if they do have problems, I don’t see them not renewing their contracts.

REECE

I get YG'S "Marketing Plan" but as a fan and as a viewer it starts to get real annoying and real old, real quick. Like Fans are tired having to wait for songs to come out, just so that they can put out a song, that sounds almost exactly the same as the rest of their discography. This isn't me being mean or whatever this is fact. Like I love Blackpink but to me I see them more as Models/Social media stars rather than artists. Real truth, they're on Instagram and doing photo shoots more than they are in the booth or practice room. They have the same producer/writer for each one of their songs, so some of their songs sound the same. I just freaking wish YG would give the girls more creative freedom. If you don't count the fact that Lisa put out two solo singles in 2021, then the last time we had a song from them was in 2020 and we're in 2022 now.

Anonymous

From what I've heard, it's usually a small face, large shoulders and height for men, and a V-shaped face, big eyes, small nose, heart-shaped lips for women. Also the double eye lids and light skin. Many Korean actors fit those beauty standards and in some way IU, Jisoo and Jin have that similar "k-drama" look.

EspeciallyJaNeé

I 100% agree with Jayla's comment. I get the plan/strategy from YG but as a HUGE blackpink fan i get annoyed because there are too many talented female groups who also give that female empowerment vibe and are way more consistent with putting out content, of course it's not the girls fault but YG pisses me off with how they treat ALL their artist period.

Anonymous

I like Blackpink, but I think it's a shame that they keep going this way as they started so big and have the potential to go far in the music industry. Whether it's because of YG or because they want to focus more on their solo stuff or "lifestyle" icon image, I don't know about that, but I think in the music industry it's important to stay relevant and keep the audience engaged, especially in kpop where so many groups grow so fast. Too long of a break might result in people getting less and less interested in BP. I still follow them but I admit I'm getting less interested in their music, because.. there just isn't any released lol. I'm wondering if maybe that's what the girls want too, as Lisa is focusing more on dancing now, Jisoo on acting and Jennie on modeling. Only Rosé seems to still show an interest in being a musician. If that's what they want in the end, good for them. But I don't know much about the YG situation and I'm not really sure what is their intention so I won't make any assumptions, other people will have better input on that.

Pls do NCT next. For NCT guide, I recommend the 3 part guide by CLKX Fiction. The 3 parts break down the groups(part 1) and the individual members from oldest to youngest(part 2 and 3)

Lo, I watch Euphoria too, I get the Maddy vibe 😏

I have a love hate relationship with BP. I'm a YG Stan from second gen. Huge 2NE1 Stan. Although they weren't on 2NE1's level, they did fill the space for girl crush that 2NE1 left. Now my issue with BP right now is that they are more like influencers with a music side hustle. Blinks want to be mad that YG isn't letting them produce music but this is a common YG problem. It never got as bad with other groups because those groups had members that produced for the group. BP is the only YG group that doesn't do this. It's a common thing for the groups to go to YG with songs/albums already done and then that's when uh will give them a comeback. BP has no creative input on their sound so they are stuck to the whims of the company. Another thing that makes disappointed me with the group is the lack of effort they put to rectify this except for Lisa. Lisa loves dancing and we see how she produces a lot of dancing videos when BP is on break. She is making use of her time and passion. Jisoo is an actor so that's what she does on break. All we see from Jennie is her modeling.

Anonymous

Rose disappoints me the most actually. She is the aspiring singer songwriter of the group so I would have expected her to have something like Lisa but with singing instead of dancing. Maybe drop some original songs for SoundCloud. So much free time but the fans get nothing. Not even Vlives. That's why I don't stunt BP, except Lisa. Yes, the company doesn't let y'all promote but there is a lot y'all can do unofficially that you guys aren't.

Lala woods

I’m casual listener of both BP and Aespa so when I see live performances of Aespa I watch it just to see what they do and obviously I love reading the comments and omg it’s a fan war every time between Blinks, Itzy fans and Aespa fans. Idk YG needs to get it together cuz other gg are getting pretty big and most are 4th gen groups so imagine those gg in a few years.

When we talk about shattering records, context needs to be had. BP shatters YouTube records and that's it. Actual awards, that's a different story. 2NE1 killed the awards at their prime. They are still the only girl group to have won all 3 Daesangs in one night at MAMA. The only girl group to get the rookie of the year and a Daesang on the same night. BP till this day has no daesang to their name. The levels of 2NE1 and BP are 2 different kinds of levels. BP was just fortunate to debut at a time when kpop was getting more global so they gained a lot of attention from the West which was their strategy.

Jennie definitely gives off Maddy vibes she has that baddie look

React to The ultimate guide to EXO by pastel kookies

Love the reaction guys and the commentary I personally like BP as well but the way their company handle them is just wild to me. Also will we be getting a Mamamoo guide as well as a TXT guide? 😊💜

Charlene Newton

Adding to other comments. Long time between comebacks for YGE artist is not exclusive to just BP. As a person who is a fan of majority of their artist it's a thing I grew accustomed to. Yes some of it is from marketing purpose, but the girls do have a growing fan base that is not purely from that marketing. And this is just for me I see online people with the push for artist to leave their existing companies, but not taking into account that survival is not always a given. Should the girls choose to re sign with YGE they will have their reasons.

Rachel

I know YG meant to create BLACKPINK as a carbon copy of 2ne1 but I feel like BLACKPINK built their own empire, sure, some of their songs sound like something 2ne1 would sing but that’s because their producer is the same one as 2ne1. They are both great groups, and that comment YG made about wanting BP to be the prettier version of 2ne1 is disgusting and unfortunately is the Korean beauty standards bc we all know 2ne1 are pretty women and so is BLACKPINK.

Rachel

Are you all planning to react to The album by BLACKPINK?

Linnea Gilbertson

I think to be honest watching the Netflix documentary or a show put out by them , will give you a better understanding of Blackpink. This one was more on the marketing and a fans perspective. Yes on Youtube they are smashing records but award wise or music wise they aren't. To be fair Blackpink the Album is the best selling kpop girl group album. It is a shame how these girls are treated, imagine if they were given more chances to promote.

Tyra Pugh

I totally agree, the rarely do much in their promotional period and I have an inkling that YG just assumes they can do it on their own as they have been. But with more and more breaks in between comebacks you run the risk of them fizzling out. How is your best selling girl group only promoting for a month? They do much more adequate promotions for their solo songs (i.e. all of lisa's radio interviews and rose's brand deals off her outfit pieces in her videos) than they do when albums or mini's drop.

Anonymous

At the time blackpink debuted, yg didn’t really need saving but as big bang stopped having comebacks and 2ne1 was dropped, and as the company went through a string of controversies specially in Korea, that was when I think blackpink was their saving grace

Cb3

Can you guys react to "The tragic truth about CL's career" ? it's a really good video which explains a lot a things about 2ne1 and her

Shaunie Mack

I think some things are misunderstood about YG financially where BlackPink is invovled. The Black Label existed way before BlackPink debuted. That building was mostly funded and started way before BlackPink's debut because YG's biggest money maker is BigBang. BigBang is the foundation of YG. After the scandals BlackPink's image and money did help in the cut. Also, YG company is more than just music, YG the company makes money because their company is diverse in subsidary and investments.

Shaunie Mack

You hit the nail on the head...there are YG stans who supports all group YG. They love the senior groups and just support the junior groups just because they're from YG.

Shaunie Mack

People keep saying they wish YG gave them more freedom...do you know if they try on their own with serious effort and present it to YG they wouldn't prevent them.

The whole thing about Blackpink saved YG is what international fans made up that you will probably never hear in Korea. In all my years living in Korea and having family and friends there, I have never ever heard this statement ever said. In Korea, regardless of their scandals, see YG as one of the legendary company that means more than the name BLACKPINK. Also, Blackpink not having an album or music out is sadly a YG thing that not only Blackpink go through. All of the groups that is under YG go through this.

Anonymous

Blackpink have a seven-year contract with YG. They debut in 2016 therefore it expires in 2023.
