The sample from Ya Ya Ya is You're the One for Me by SWV. You definitely know it! And my faves on the album are Obsession, Ya Ya Ya, Groove & Day After Day. They've all been on my every day playlist since the day the album dropped.

I live for people hearing Jekyll and then Groove for the first time! It was really interesting what you said about baby you are, hadn't ever really thought about it before but I think you're right that the flow could have been better. If you want to get to know their voices I would recommend oohmaya lyric videos as they are 100% and also have good translation too (whoever did the ones you watched had no clue who's singing at all)

Jo

I was going to say the same for my favorites!

Butterfly Effect is a song for EXO-Ls. And it's interesting the last lyric on Obsession is "get away from me" and the last line from Butterfly Effect is "don't go/leave (from me)." Mirrors the whole exo/x-exo/foil concept.

wow obsession! there are some parts that are also not accurate like the 1st chorus in Groove after baek and suho is chen so you thought the 2 members are only singing at the start coz suho got longer line in the colorcoded video, some missing sehun parts in YaYaYa and more switched suho-chen lines in Day After Day. Also this album is EXO vs X-EXO that's why Obsession, Trouble and Jekyll have almost the same vibes, and Jekyll lyrics is connected with Obsession.

i love this album so so sooooooo much. "ya ya ya" is my most played exo song for a reason. it's also a huge fan favorite for those of us who grew up listening to '90s r&b like swv! i will never forget the first time i heard that song and the sample from "you're the one" started (best use of a sample in kpop IMO). i swear i screamed! i just wish we could get a re-release with all the members on it!!

When RJ goes for the earphones you know it’s serious! 😂

So happy for this reaction and that you loved it. Jekyll is my favorite song on the album but mostly because of the concept and how interesting it is. If you think about the Exo/X-Exo like Jekyll and Hyde the lyrics are literally them fighting with an evil version of themselves inside of them which explains the abrupt back and forth. Like when the lyrics say I only need one of me inside me and then Warning Breakout, it shook me the first time! Ya Ya Ya is my number 2 pick, then Groove is 3rd although I love them all so it is hard to rank them. I agree with other these translations were a little off but maybe use oohmaya lyric videos next album listen, otherwise you still got the main gist of the songs.

Jekyll does have a concert performance that is a MUST see. Especially the Kai fancam!!!!

So the weird flow of the album is actually intentional. the concept of the album is part of their storyline, where they have two versions of exo fighting each other (exo and x-exo). In the Obsession MV you can see them fighting the other version of themselves. For the album, theres supposed to be a contrast between the parts sung by each "version" of exo, and theyre struggling for dominance throughout the album. (its especially clear in the lyrics of jekyll). hence the albums flow and song types being all over the place

My faves YaYaYa, Groove, Baby You Are, Butterfly Effect

Looool I LOVE how you immediately knew ya ya ya was gonna be it right from the start 😂😊

Jekyll is that song that almost everyone doesn't understand at first, but then almost everyone falls in love with ahhahahah My favourites are Jekyll, Baby You Are and Butterfly Effect. But the whole album is just amazing! Can't wait for you to check out other exo's albums, their discography is exceptionally great! P.S. almost all the adlibs you pointed out were done by Baekhyun, his voice is very rich so he does adlibs and layerings for exo's songs a lot

Scones

Yes! So happy you reacted to Obsession! :D Exo B-sides are quality! I agree with Baby you are not fitting that well after Ya Ya Ya, even if it was intentional for the concept! My faves are Ya ya ya, Trouble and Butterfly effect! :)

If you are doing lyric videos for EXO, check on the channel oohmaya, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnszX9UHcOJUMdjxn2yGOdQ first. This is Cesar Oh's other channel where they do translations for EXO songs. They are the most accurate translations, and you can be 100% sure they are showing the correct members singing for all the parts. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to do all of EXO's discography. But Obsession is one album they have done. There were a lot of things wrong with the lyric video from the Black Bunny channel, not the least of which is the audio quality. It sounds a little muffled compared to the original, and compared the one on oohmaya's channel. I would definitely give their lyric videos for Obsession a watch, just to get the translations, the best quality audio and the correct members identified. It really enhances the whole experience so much more. BTW, Jekyll grows on you...like some sort of parasite...it grabs hold and never lets go. I get so excited every time it comes on my playlist, and I was not a fan of it on first listen...

Woanyu Yu

Yes! I love the whole album. And yes, Jekyll is my favorite as you predicted.
