MAXIMS

Our identities are shaped by the stories we tell ourselves.

Every identity is false because the ego is the false self.

Everyone wants to be special just like everyone else.

There are infinite paths to your destination.

A simple life is the default human state.

Resentment is a consequence of clinging to the way you wish things were.

Limiting beliefs are the most dangerous form of identity clutter.

The process is only as compelling as its benefits.

Expectations are the bedrock for disappointment.

Deeply appreciated this episode! I've struggled with autoimmune illness, and then got Long COVID a year ago-- resulting in my always-on-the-go, "big job" life being completely, involuntarily wrested from me! Time to surrender, accept, and find that new way of being in the world, which definitely has meant painful removal of some "identity clutter". Still in process, but wanted to say thank you-- as I've been largely stuck in my home over the last year due to physical limitations and debilitating pain and symptoms from Long COVID, and using this time to slowly minimize my belongings has been a balm during a pretty lousy season. I've had some incredible jobs that I honestly never expected to ever have-- working for Bono from U2, heading Malala's foundation-- but my body is in revolt, so those days are gone for now, maybe forever. I'm living one day at a time, but it's sure lighter with less. This episode helped me as I sorted through work memories from special times, but I don't need every paper, photo or memento! I can parse down to what's most special and meaningful. A special shout out to JFM, your transparency about health and disability has also been a gift, and a rarity in content. As I've navigated becoming a disabled person, this podcast has been a blessing and powerful tool in unexpected ways. Thanks to all the folks on Team The Minimalists! (PS I long to see Malabama's face! Get that gal and her laugh on camera!)

This episode & desirelessness are y’all’s best episodes in my opinion. Thank you for helping me realize that I have issues with identity clutter & clinging to the past. I really hope to get better with those things.

I love all of the episodes! I’m listening to all of them again through Patreon now. For the first time, I’m saddened by something you’ve discussed. Regarding the “natural” side conversation: Heterosexuality is not the only natural form of sexuality. Homosexuality has always existed in nature and is not even uniquely human. Thousands of other species exhibit this sexuality too. It is well documented and there is extensive scientific literature on it. It’s important to clarify that “heterosexuality being the only natural state” is an opinion / belief and is NOT an accurate example of something that is the only natural phenomenon. Homosexuality is NOT a choice. We are born this way and it is natural in the truest definition of the word. Please do not insult the LGBTQIA+ community by suggesting that sexuality and its fluidity is not natural. Thank you.
