The asides really work here—the exposition doesn’t feel like exposition with the ‘why do you torture me so,’ etc. Really curious about the pack; Redd weighing life in the village vs the woods could involve a whole other community element (insert long ramble about how knowledge and change can lead to feelings of loss, and how community can mitigate that). Plus the potential for additional partners. Last point: love the way you say ‘good little beast.’
