Geez. I really don't know what to say. I really don't. It was... pretty bad. I honestly can't imagine how Paolini took this long to write it. Like, 10, 20 years? How? Not only has his skills not improved, it's actually *worse* than any of the Eragon books.

I'm knee-jerk reacting, but yeah, it was truly bad. I don't know if I should spoil it or not ($15 as an ebook so idk if people will actually buy it), but...

The first three-ish chapters were literally copy-pasted from the novella teasing the plot originally. Not a great start if you read that (which I did).

The next 300 or so pages (out of 900) didn't advance the story at all. They were truly, truly awful.

To give an example, Murtagh find out about the bad guy (all this was already covered in a previous book btw and is the only interesting part of the first 300 pages. which i already read...) and goes to find them.

He follows his only clue to a city, wanting to get in touch with a chick he knows who gathers information. Letter gets intercepted by a cat. Cat says 'ok you can't go to that beech, not safe. ill tell you'.

Murtagh: 'ok'

Cat: 'btw i need you to do me a solid first tho'

Murtagh: 'ok...? what is it?'

Cat :' ok so first get a dragon scale by robbing glaedr grave'

Murtagh:'...wtf?'

Cat: 'and then go use it to catch a fish bc it like shiny stuff'

Murtagh: 'fish?'

Cat: ' ye. rly big dangerous fish. catch it.'

Murtagh : ' ok'

Cat : 'after the fish, you must take it to the guard captain and get him to hire you bc ppl hate the fish and you kill it.'

Murtagh: 'I see.'

Cat: 'And then after becoming a guard you must find another cat who is cap there. and then come back i will tell you?'

Murtagh: 'ok ill go now'

300 pages later

Murtagh: 'i did it here is the cat and also i found a ra'zac egg...?'

Cat: ' wow thanks and btw thats insane. i will tell you now.'

Murtagh: 'ok just one question. this cat stuff and also the ra'zac egg and the dragon scale and everything and me being a guard will be relevant later?'

Cat: 'no, lol. no more questions i will tell you now. the bad guy is north from eragon village. literally just go north you will find her there.'

Murtagh: 'ok bye.'

I probably will not end up reading it. I have fond memories of the first two books since I read them when I was about 12 and I think that was the prime age for enjoying Paolini's work. Although to be fair he did write them when he was quite young. Even when the third book came out I was already a little disinterested. Sad to hear that his writing style hasn't evolved much, truly the worst thing that can happen to a writer is having immediate success. Most of the best authors publish their best works after years of trying.

Ocean Breeze

I didn't know this book existed, but I would never have bothered to read it. The first book of the series is the best, and I felt like each one was worse than the previous.

Pearl of the Orient

Paolini could have benefited from writing classes. He's still at high school level writing, it'll make the transition to other works much harder.

Poor paolini. I'm sure if he heard us talking bad about him he would cry. Maybe even have to dry his tears with all the $200 bills from all his books being bestsellers.
