A while back, I remember coming across a little-known (at that time) light novel called 'Eminence in the Shadow'. I read some of it because the premise was interesting, but I found it to be... pretty bad. It did a bunch of stuff wrong, but mostly it just felt very generic to me, and the writing style was rather amateurish too.

At some point, it got a manga adaptation. I tried it again, but I still didn't like it.

But just the other day, while scanning the popular anime, I saw it again. I didn't know it'd gotten an adaptation, but even if I did, I probably wouldn't have cared. Though, with nothing else to watch, I gave it a try.

I was pretty surprised to find myself liking it this time around. It isn't the first time it took an anime adaptation to hook me, but I suddenly found myself wondering what exactly the reason was for this. I think it's about immersion. The story just feels so much more alive, and maybe a little more real, when it's portrayed in that way.

That's pretty much all I have to say on the topic. But I kind of envy that aspect of animation (as a writer). It's pretty hard to make a story feel like it's about to leap off the page. Very few writers can actually do that, but the combo of video and audio doesn't seem to have that issue. Or maybe the studio is just really good.

(...i haven't read the LN in ages, but I think a lot of the boring stuff was cut out for the anime as well, like how he got his slime gear, collected the individual members of his organization and so on.)

Anyway, if you haven't watched it yet, and you like an MC that's a little edgy, give it a shot.
