This show, it’s really a gem. That feeling you had as they were fighting for those last few points, the creators really went all out it feels like. They really are taking us as viewers on such a journey. And really showcasing how complex yet satisfying sports can be. That said, something they don’t go into as much is just how many teams there really are though. Japan is huge, it’s 52 teams that compete in the national tournament. To break that down a bit, the Karasuno boys are currently in the qualifiers. There’s three rounds of qualifiers, then the quarter finals, semi finals, and finally the finals. Whoever wins those finals then go on to compete in the National Tournament. They started the qualifiers with 32 teams but only 1 can go on to nationals to represent their prefecture. So yeah, there’s plenty more challenges ahead of them. Oh, also wanted to point out that with the line refs (the guys holding the red flags) that if you see them hold the flag up, it means the ball went out of bounds. If they point their flags down toward the court, it means the ball landed in bounds. Just another bit of attention to detail that the animators took to help make the matches feel as authentic as possible.

So if our guys do not lose the final match with Aoba then we'll have 3 more matches left before nationals and there they'll be met with 52 teams?!
