It's satisfying getting an episode that sort of connects it all together between the first season, the movie and now. You're exactly right that Geto's motive or plan in season 1 seems to be completely different than in the movie and in this backstory, so I'm glad you picked up on that! Back to this student version of Geto though, his transition from seemingly such a good guy to a mass murderer with a plan for changing the world seems a bit abrupt, and they explain that his change happened over the course of a year while he spent a lot of time alone on missions, witnessing all the nasty curses that regular people are creating with their negativity. Isolation and wrestling with morality can do a lot of things to a young person who has the power to make change happen quickly, and Yuki came in with a sideways approval of his thinking that may have been the last push that he wanted deep down. I'm especially intrigued by the psychology of it all and how it relates to real-world examples of people who "snap" and do something terrible after living a good life beforehand. I imagine this story of Geto's backstory landed much better with some than others, and I'd understand if some think it was too quick of a change or unsatisfying as an explanation for his actions. "Quick" note on Heavenly Pacts - I want to explain it here because if you looked it up there's a pretty big spoiler that you probably want to avoid. Basically, they're something a sorcerer can be born with that affects their cursed energy in some way. The sorcerer has no control over this type of pact and it cannot be removed. Mechamaru (Kokichi Muta) has one where he was born with a horrifically crippled body, but in exchange has a huge amount of cursed energy that he can control remotely over long distances. He uses this to control his puppet/robot things in season 1. Maki Zenin and Toji Zenin(Fushiguro) both have one that gives them superhuman bodies (strength, speed, senses). In Maki's case, her cursed energy is down at the level of a regular human. She can't see curses and cant manipulate her energy at all. Toji however has absolutely zero cursed energy, the only known such case, and his physical enhancements are to the most extreme point that he can "detect" cursed spirits and energy with his human senses.

Although it can seem abrupt you make a great point that he's been dealing with this alone while the others seem to be okay with their role as sorcerers. Coming into this season 2 we all knew Geto was the bad guy in season 1 but actually seeing the transition was really sad and made me sort of emotional. Ah gotcha, so within the heavily pacts there are different versions to them!
