According to Eric Costello (an authority on the history of post-ball in Faerie) it took them a long time to settle on the term for the player who throws the ball.  "Thrower" seemed obvious at the start, but it wasn't fancy enough.  "We do not simply throw," the pros objected.  And so, out of respect for their ballistic art, they have been called variously "pitchers," "bowlers," "hurlers," and "flingers."  Call one a "tosser" however, and you may be in for a fight.
