I've been checking on them daily since photographing the early buds, and today the flowers finally opened.  At the top you can see one that still hasn't unfurled, and can get a sense of the sort of "untwisting" move that takes place.  The flowers are small, approximately 2cm in length, and have an unusual bulbous chamber in the base, around the stamens.  They have a faint aroma that smells like .. well, like flowers.

Make? Last year I only got 2 dozen and the largest one was the size of a golf ball. Half of their volume is seeds, which are the size of pumpkin seeds but hard as rocks. They don't lend themselves well to any sort of "making." I just eat them. Ripe, they are sweet & creamy and taste like creme broulle. Not ripe they taste like instant regret. It is amazing that something so astonishingly horrible can turn into nature's most delicious fruit if you just wait til the right moment.
