I had wanted to make the photo productions better for a while now. Like experimenting, getting out of my comfort zone, and making more “ambitious things”.
Midory, with whom I’ve done photos in the past and had worked with in a couple of friend’s productions in the past, is a Stylist. I had told her I would text her to hire her, but it just didn’t happen. Not until I saw Elian because she put together a garage sale at her home ‘cause she wanted to make some extra money before leaving for New York to study dance and musical theatre. So we were like “Let’s do some photos together before I leave”. I mean, what a great excuse to make a photo shoot.
So I thought a lot about it and ways of making this goodbye-shooting cool, and I decided, very ambitiously that I was doing 2 different sessions.
First, I thought about this beautiful place I worked in years ago called “Hacienda de la Luz”, which is like an hour away from Toluca, very deep into the highway. It’s a small and beautiful bullfighting ranch, and it looked like you were in a small Spanish town. I really wanted to rent that place but the cost of the location and transport to get there were too high. The cost was around $3,000 - MXN 4,500 for one night (which was the best option) that price without taking into account the food, transportation, stylist, and model. Because the plan was to pay Elian so she had extra money for her trip. So the price would rise up to $12,000 - MXN 15,000.
So after giving it much thought, the best option was to do the photo session a bit closer to Mexico City with less investment, and that way we would make not only one session but 2. Because we would save a lot of money on travel expenses, so this second session was totally affordable.
We started setting dates with Midory and Elian, and we thought about inviting Meli for the second shooting, with whom I’ve collaborated a bunch of times already. Even though I felt everything was under control, by that time I had to coordinate three different schedules of three different people, making sure we had 2 different sets of different outfits (one for each production), solving the transportation, location, and weather issues.
For the first sessions, I rented “Hacienda Panoayan” for 3 hours, which is a bit more than an hour away from Mexico City, and has a beautiful labyrinth so it gave us an “Alice in Wonderland” vibe. The idea was amazing but it was too hard getting to coordinate the outfits with Midory. We literally solved that two days before the photo shoot. I was about to have a breakdown.
For the second shooting, we agreed that it would be like a picnic session, so we went to Ajusco where Meli knows some spots that could be helpful for our picnic setting. We brought fruit props and a basket and so on.
It all sounds incredibly wonderful, but to be honest, I was thinking about all the possible ways it could go wrong. How nothing would’ve looked good, or that it could rain (because it was rainy season). So a couple of days before the shooting, I was lying in bed looking outside the window and I thought to myself “What if I just send everything to hell?”. Hahaha, I felt at peace just for the thought of that and I decided to cancel EVERYTHING! However, it was too late at night to let everyone know about my decision. So I went out to walk, and then to the cinema, and I felt soooo relaxed and chill that 3 hours later I changed my mind back again and thought “I trust myself. I trust that whatever is going to happen I have the ability and knowledge to take amazing photos. I trust in Elian and Meli’s talent, with whom I’ve worked in the past several times, and I know they always deliver.
So in the end we stuck to the plan, more peacefully, and got these beautiful results. I will eventually tell you more about that experience. Thanks for reading all the way down here!

Desde hace varios meses había tenido la curiosidad de crecer un poco más las producciones; experimentar, salir de mi zona de confort y hacer cosas... un poco mas “ambiciosas”.
Midory, con quien he hecho fotos en anterioridad y con quien había trabajado a la par en producciones de amigos, es Stylist y tenía tiempo diciéndole que pronto le escribiría para contratarla, pero eso no pasaba, hasta que Elian organizó una venta de garage en su casa con el motivo de recaudar fondos porque se iba a ir a vivir a Nueva York para estudiar danza y teatro musical y salió un "hay que hacer fotos antes de que me vaya" de su parte y qué mejor para mí tener esa excusa.
Así que me puse a echarle coco a la idea de que podría estar cool para esta sesión de despedida y decidí que iba a hacer 2 y la verdad me vi muy ambicioso.
Primero pensé en un lugar hermoso al que fui a trabajar en algún momento llamado "hacienda de la luz" que está como a una hora de Toluca refundido en la carretera, que es como un hacienda taurina muy chiquita y bonita pero que parecía que estabas en algún pueblillo español y me encapriché mucho con la locación, pero el costo de la locación y el transporte se elevaba demasiado aparte de que estábamos lejísimos. La locación, si nos quedabamos una noche (que era lo ideal) o si solo íbamos a fotos, oscilaba entre los $4,500-$3,000MXN, sin comidas + transporte + stylist + modelo (porque la idea también era pagarle a Elian para que tuviera dinero para su viaje), entonces se me iba a subir a unos $12,000-$15,000.
Así que después de seguir pensando, lo ideal era hacerlas más cerca de la CDMX con menos inversión y no hacer solo 1 sino 2, ya que con lo que me ahorraría en viáticos, se podría armar tranquilamente una segunda sesión.
Empezamos a definir fechas y con Midory y Elian y se nos ocurrió para la segunda sesión invitar a Meli, con quien he hecho un montón de sesiones. Para ese momento aunque aun sentía todo dentro de mi control ya era coordinarme con 3 personas en horarios, conseguir 2 sets de outfits diferentes (uno para cada producción), ver qué onda con el transporte, locaciones y el clima...
Para la primera sesión renté por 3 horas la Hacienda Panoayan, que está a 1:15 hrs aprox de la CDMX y que tiene un laberinto hermoso y definimos ese estilo como algo tipo Alicia en el País de las Maravillas. La idea estaba increíble pero sufrí mucho coordinando con Midory lo de las prendas que iba a conseguir, y literal se logró 2 días antes de la sesión y a mí ya me estaba dando un ataque de nervios.
Para la segunda sesión acordamos que sería como una sesión de picnic y la idea era ir hacia el Ajusco donde Meli conoce algunos spots que podrían servir para armar nuestro fondo de picnic y llevar props como fruta y una canasta y así.
Todo suena increíblemente maravilloso, pero yo la verdad estaba en una crisis pensando en que todo podría salir mal, que nada se iba a ver bien y que nos iba a llover porque en esa temporada estaba lloviendo mucho y un par de días antes de la primera sesión estaba echado en mi cama viendo a la ventana y me dije “¿Y si cancelo todo y ya no me estreso?” jajajaja, y me entró una paz en mi interior, así que decidí cancelar ¡¡TODO!! Con la pena… ya era muy noche para avisar a todas las personas involucradas mi decisión, así que salí, fui al cine y estaba tan tan tan en paz que 3 hrs después cambie de opinión y ya más tranquilo me dije “confío en mí y en que sea como sea, salga como salga tengo el conocimiento y las habilidades para sacar fotos bien chingonas y confío en el talento de Meli y Elian con quienes he trabajo un chingo de veces y se que siempre lo dan TODO”. Así que al final del día seguimos con el plan, aunque ya con más calma, y bueno se hicieron unas fotos bien chingonas.
