Brimstone Bone Basher V2

Weapon (mace), artifact (requires attunement)

The Brimstone Bone Basher intertwines death and fire, featuring a ghastly skull crowned with searing spikes, and a second, menacing skull at the handle's base.

Dormant State. While the Brimstone Bone Basher is in a dormant state, you gain the following benefits:

  • You can cast light at will, causing the mace to emit a ghastly, flickering light.
  • As an action, you can summon a Brimstone Skeleton from the ground at a point you can see within 30 feet of you. The Brimstone Skeleton has the statistics of a regular skeleton, with resistance to fire damage and, when struck by a melee attack, the attacker takes 1d6 fire damage. Any Brimstone Skeleton summoned in this manner crumbles to dust at the next dawn or when you summon another. After summoning a skeleton this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.

Awakened. When the Brimstone Bone Basher reaches an awakened state, you gain the following benefits:

  • Brimstone Skeletons summoned by the mace have additional hit points equal to your level and make two attacks on their turn instead of one.
  • Once per long rest, as an action, you can slam the mace into the ground, causing the earth within a 5-foot radius of you to crack and emit a burst of fiery energy. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 18), taking 4d10 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Exalted. When the Brimstone Bone Basher reaches its exalted state, you gain the following benefits:

  • You can now summon five Brimstone Skeletons simultaneously, using the summoning property of the mace once per long rest.
  • When you are hit by a melee attack, you can use your reaction to cause the attacker to take 2d10 fire damage. You can use this property a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (a minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Optional Evolution Stages for the Brimstone Bone Basher.

  • Dormant: Levels 1-8, or upon showcasing mercy amidst the fiery chaos of an infernal plane.
  • Awakened: Levels 9-15, or after defeating a potent demonic entity without yielding to its dark temptations.
  • Exalted: Levels 16-20, or during an act of profound sacrifice, averting a cataclysmic infernal cataclysm while safeguarding the innocent.

Random Properties. The Brimstone Bone Basher has the following random properties:

  • 1 minor beneficial property
  • 1 minor detrimental property

Cursed. The curse of the Brimstone Bone Basher grows in severity in accordance with its power stage:

  • Dormant: Attuning to the mace curses you until you are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic. While cursed, you find yourself slightly favoring conflict over peaceful resolutions.
  • Awakened: The curse intensifies. Your thoughts are invaded by whispers that encourage violence and make it hard to form alliances or trust others. Whenever you take a long rest, roll a d6; on a roll of 1, you are afflicted by nightmares, preventing you from gaining the benefit of the rest.
  • Exalted: The mace’s dark power threatens to overtake you. You have disadvantage on all Charisma checks directed at non-hostile creatures, as your demeanor becomes evidently aggressive and malevolent. You are also compelled to seek out and engage in combat more frequently. When you manage to avoid conflict in a situation where it was a viable option, roll a d6; on a roll of 1-2, the mace enforces a psychic punishment, dealing 2d6 psychic damage to you. If you die while attuned to the mace, your soul becomes trapped within it, forever doomed to serve the infernal powers that forged the mace.

Destroying the Brimstone Bone Basher.

To destroy the mace, it must be submerged in the molten heart of an undead phoenix while a cleric intones a sacred prayer of release. As the cleric speaks, both phoenix and mace will be enveloped in a searing blaze of holy fire, disintegrating into ash and freeing any ensnared souls, marking the mace's cataclysmic end.
