So, it's the start of a new month and seeing as how its the holidays, I want to thank you guys for continuing to support me doing this stuff here, even though last month was a little slow. Again, sorry for that; I'm going to try and make up for it this month.

I also wanted to pose a question so I'm leaving this post visible to all: Patreon has been sending me messages about their "charge upfront " option There's good arguments for and against it, but  and since it's an irreversible one way choice I haven't gone for it.  I'd like you to chime in and let me know if that's going to be something you guys are in favor of, just okay with, or is going to be a deal breaker.

I think it is worth it to charge immediately, charging at the end of the month encourages people to "steal" this art and repost it. If people want to sample your art before they pledge, simply link your DeviantArt page in the description of your homepage.

I think it is worth it, 100%. It sounds like it would drastically cut down on people skimming content while avoiding payment. It would also allow many artists to provide their content immediately to new subscribers. Currently some of the artists I follow don't grant access until your first payment has processed, which can mean a wait for people who have no actual intention of defrauding them. No harm, large positive. Definitely worth it.

Noisekeeper

It probably doesn't effect me much personally. I suppose it is up to whether you feel people have been skimming your content and avoiding payment enough to where it is impacting you.

I'm all for it, I'd think of a fan of your work would be wanting to support you on patreon would have immediate access to all of the previous posts.

Charge up front is better for me personally because I have the cash on hand to pay at that moment when I make the decision to pledge to someone.

Trivialconquest

Hardly matters to me at this point, though I could see the decision to swtich turning some off. I'd really only change if you feel that you might be seriously getting short-changed.

How does this affect current subscribers? Would we get charged immediately for December, then again on Jan. 1 for January?

saburox

My understanding it wouldn't. It would charges you immediately when you subscribe but then recurring charges would be at the first of the month as usual, so this shouldn't effect current subscribers unless they unsubbed and resubbed. But since you raise a good question, I've added a link to the message above so you can look at the same information I did.

I'm more in favor of it, because for people who don't want to support by subscription, it can be used as sort of a one time ticket into the gallery.

Filosobear

I agree. This won't really impact me in any way, but the fact that I could see what was going on here before payment was a big draw to Patreon in the first place. I've pledged to some folks who then put nothing up for the month, so having confidence that the creator will semi-regularly put out content is important. That said, I would certainly advise making the switch if you notice a discrepancy between what you are pledged during the month and what you actually receive when payments are charged.

I think it is inconceivable that Patreon even has an option to access the content without having already paid something, let alone has it as the default arrangement.
