Taryn Clay

VERY excited for this! Love you guys so much!

Ben

Great pick. So excited to watch this. I recommend reacting to any of denis villeneuve’s other films as well you can’t pick a bad one

James

This was the best alien movie I’ve ever seen it’s so unique I love it. We need more movies like this one the concept was so cool and the story was amazing. I had chills the entire time watching this, the reveal about her child at the end sent shivers down my spine.

Richard Batten

I love this movie. Denis Villeneuve (The Director) is a genius. He has directed amazing movies (Blade Runner 2049 and Dune). Dune is a cinematic masterpiece. I would highly recommend. Also, I'm not sure why (maybe from the Majong refence) I would recommend "Searching for Bobby Fischer" and "The Queen's Gambit" both amazing content. As always. I love your content. Keep up the great work, Rob and Trin!!!

James

So someone explained it to me that its not that louise was time traveling it was more like she was able to experience her whole life simultaneously. She was "remembering" the past ,present and future all at once. So she cant change anything.... its all already happened. Its like She has the DVD of her whole life and she can skip back and forth to whatever spot she wants and experience it over and over so in reality because the alien language gave her that perspective of time, she can literally spend as much time with her daughter as she wants.

Steven Schmaling

Abbot knew he would die and still came to earth because he knew they needed humanities help in 3k years. I wonder how long he knew he would die. Just as Louise had a baby knowing it would die. He saw the end of his life and didn’t change anything. I’ve seen this movie 9ish times and I just now had that thought. Loved your reactions ❤️

roncelune

How the hell did I forget you were watching one of my favorite movies ever today ! Thank you to the people who submitted and voted for it in the polls !

Bradley Weeks

I can't imagine what that would do to someone to experience your life in a nonlinear fashion. How much of her future can she remember? Would you start to feel like a passenger riding along your life experiencing the consequences of decisions you already made? Do you (or can you) forgo joy because of future pain? Such an incredible and well crafted thought provoking movie.

PsYcHoKiLLa

Was surprised you didn't catch that she wasn't remembering the child before it was revealed, there were plenty of hints. Denis Villeneuve also made the latest Dune movies (Part 2 coming out March 1st) if this movie has wet your whistle for his stuff, he also directed Blade Runner 2049.

Peter Ceniceros

Finally a movie I choose wins hahaha, glad you guys liked it! One of my favorite Sci-fi movies of all time.

FedeM

One of my favorite movies ever, the day is finally here! As soon as the wonderful score starts I already get chills! Arrival has such a special place in my heart, so many thought-provoking plot points and philosophical questions are raised in this film and the fact that it is done so artistically and with aliens just makes it even more unforgettable

Nathan Hill

Best sci-fi movie of the 2010s imo. Also an incredible short story. Edit: I’m almost certain this came out before Dark btw. Not sure if anyone involved was the same but if nothing else, was probably highly influential.

Leksa

Been waiting for this, I love this movie. It's so interesting and different from what you normally see, has good emotional aspects too... love the concept, and love the reaction!

Chris B

Rob, Trin - Denis Villeneuve, next to Nolan, one of my favourite directors. (recently Dune with Dune part 2 in cinemas next month). If you have seen the original Blade Runner, I highly recommend the sequel which Denis did - Blade Runner 2049. It's one of those rare instances where a sequel holds up to an original masterpiece.

Oriana Lo Presti

Hey are you guys thinking of reacting to society of snow anytime soon? It's new, but will probably be movie of the year. It was spectacular. Same director from the impossible, and its a true story.

Chrissy

Ahhh this was so good! Great getting to rewatch this absolute gem with you two! I had been suggesting this one for a while, hoping it’d win in the polls eventually and it finally won! • Love that you pointed out similarities between this and Dark. Great observation! They do have very similar styles. Denis Villeneuve directed Arrival, and he has a very distinct style in many of his films similar to how Nolan does. Villeneuve is a legit artist. • I agree 100% with your comments on how this is how to portray aliens, not in ways that would be normal for us humans, not the stereotypical aliens, but something that’s so mind blowing and different to us that doesn’t make sense. The design of the aliens here is just so cool that I wish we had even more screen time seeing them. • It’s really true what you said about how this film seems to be more about a message than about aliens, but aliens are delivering the message. I believe this film is based off a book. Never read it but I hear it’s good and a necessary part of what sci-fi can do, helping us explore existential themes in intimate ways. • Think even more heartbreaking yet powerful is something you pointed out: not only does she choose to have her child knowing she’ll lose her child, but she also chooses to love Ian, knowing he’s gonna eventually leave her. That might even be the more powerful choice (if “choice” is even the right word here since it can be seen she didn’t have a choice), but there’s so much this film leaves for us to process. Thanks for a great, thoughtful reaction as always!! This was such a gift.

Keith Duperreault

I must be a paranoid person.... the moment they are suiting me up to go meet a new alien species, and when I ask them "What are they like?" and the answer given back to me is, "You'll see."... I will be thinking some kind of mental control. It meets the first humans, takes them over somehow, then get's those humans to bring in experts in all fields of science, sociology, psychology, etc.. take them over, and work from the top down in all branches of society. Every new visitor being told, "You just have to go and see for yourself." An invasion before you even know its happening.

Michael Celia

You're right. This movie is a perfect companion piece to Dark, both aesthetically and thematically. The idea that the aliens - and now Louise - experience time in a non-linear fashion is obviously illustrated by their communicating in circular patterns...they see everything in a time loop all at one time.

Cindy Clarkson

The movie is based on Ted Chiang‘s short story „Story of your Life“. Ted Chiang wrote some of the most intelligent sci-fi short stories I've ever read. But I could hardly imagine that this exact story would ever be made into a movie…

Chrissy

Oh thank you for adding those details!! I knew I heard of the book (well I suppose short story in this case) before but had forgotten the name.

Jordan Tanner

The director is Denis Villeneuve. He is maybe my favorite director. I STRONGLY recommend checking out Prisoners and Dune from him as well.

Calbah

The potentially confusing thing about the relationship is that they don't show you the breakup or how it stands afterward. My interpretation is that he in no way abandoned Hannah. He ended the relationship because she essentially kept a major truth from him that took away his choices. It probably felt like he was lied to every day of their relationship. The father/daughter relationship is likely a normal divorced dad, but with the added complication that he struggles with the knowledge that Hannah will die young (knowledge that he has had for less time than his ex).

Elizabeth F Dorner

Villeneuve is such a masterful storyteller. I second checking out Dune, it's another masterpiece.

This movie was one of the most brilliant things I've ever watched I'm so glad you guys got to enjoy that as well. Denis Villeneuve as I have said before, is one of the top directors of our time and I highly suggest watching Prisoners.

Kim Magee

Am I the only person who thinks she knows roughly how old the daughter was when she was diagnosed with cancer why wouldn't you two or three years before that get every check on that area that you could until the cancer shows up, try to catch it before it gets bad

Kim Magee

I mean she knows how old the child was surely and she knows where the cancer was

Steven Schmaling

The wife’s dying words in English were “in war there are no winners, only widows.”

Calbah

Do they ever actually say that it's cancer in the movie? I think she just referred to it as rare and unstoppable. The treatment scenes we are shown certainly do make it look like cancer though.

This is one of my favorite movies. Really enjoyed your thoughtful reaction.

Hi Rob and Trin! I'm not sure if you take recommendations into consideration here but I think you would enjoy watching Society of the Snow on Netflix. Brilliant movie, based on a true story, it's just very good. Hopefully you consider it in a next poll or in your picks :)

Sean, aka Turd Ferguson

I know I'm late to the comments, just subbed to the patreon recently, but but it was interesting on how you reacted to Louise dreaming in the alien language. I'm in IT and every time I learned and started writing code in a new language, I would always have dreams in that coding language... I think it's a natural reaction.
