Walker ST 5 subscribers And here's Dwight... The road for the first appearance of my favorite TWD character has just started.

I don't think Denise went out so she could feel useful... it was her facing her fears... she was tired of being a coward, you see this in the beginning of the episode where she is watching Eugene going off with Abraham.... Eugene, the other coward. Regardless of being a doctor, no one wants to feel afraid and incapable of taking care of themselves.

Denise didn’t feel brave enough to tell Tara she loved her back and felt guilty because of it with Tara still being gone, so she decides she wants to tag-along with Daryl who makes her feel safe and Rosita fresh off a devastating break-up. Yes, she’s their only doctor and should be protected to a certain degree, but she’s also her own person who wants feel useful in different ways most likely as a way to deal with the feelings of guilt over how she left it with Tara. She wants to feel something real and tactile and visceral because she realizes that Tara might not come back to Alexandria, something could happen and she wouldn’t get that chance to tell her how she really feels. She needed to go out there so she could stop feeling like a coward, to give herself the permission to be brave. Regardless of how smart and useful Eugene and Denise are, they still need to feel like a capable survivor when it comes to making it now and you must have confidence in yourself to do so. There seems to be no end to the Saviors threat as our character’s dishearteningly discover yet another group of Negan acolytes. Our people do seem more skilled at fighting than this Negan group but with skirmish after skirmish, it’s likely only a matter of time before they are digging more fresh graves beside Denise’s. Thankfully, our group plays it smart, so they should keep winning tactical victories in their battles against Negan inc. as long as they don’t get overwhelmed with superior numbers, they have killed dozens and dozens of them by now, just how many more of these Negan soldiers could their possibly be?

Denise was trying to help Darryl and Rosita as well as herself. When she said “I have training in this” she was referring to psychology. She was trying to get them to see themselves the way she sees them, at the same time trying not to be so afraid herself. It was a loving gesture, just bad timing.

Tommy Thompson

I get where the writers were coming from with Denise, it's just handled in such a clumsy way, that by the end of the episode you're basically saying ''I knew it.'' or ''See!!'' If she had survived the episode, at least, then the argument that she needed to do it to feel brave / less of a coward, might have resonated more with viewers. Instead, she puts herself in danger, and then gets killed in a situation that otherwise could have been avoided. Not only did she know that she was inexperienced with 'walkers', but Daryl and Rosita are both fully aware of the current situation, with The Saviours. It therefore makes very little sense for Denise (or anyone else) to be prioritising their feelings about guilt or strength etc over basic survival. Add that to the fact that she's their ONLY doctor, and you get a very weak story arc that is clumsy and frustrating to watch.

Yeah, I would tend to agree that it wasn’t handled in the best way writing-wise and the message gets a bit muddled with her dying, but I’m not sure it completely invalidates it. If people in this world can’t defend themselves, they will eventually die and you have to be able to kill to defend the ones you love. As a psychologist in her previous life, I’m sure Denise understood this concept thoroughly. And yes the Saviors are still a threat but they’re not an immediate one, and as far as they know, it’s possible that they got them all in their previous attacks. So yes, it was risky to go out at that time but it wasn’t as if the Saviors were at their gates with their guns drawn. It’s not entirely stupid to think that the Saviors might be wary of our group with how deftly they’ve been handled each time. Our group is very confident at this point, some may even say over confident, but either way, it’s entirely realistic that they think they have got the Savior’s either beat or almost beaten at this point. People react mostly based on their emotions rather than logic, so the fact that characters may do dumb things sometimes completely lines up with reality imo, as long as I understand their underlying motivations, I can accept it as true to life.

Tommy Thompson

Well that's my issue with it really, it's either a conscious effort to make Denise seem like she isn't thinking straight (doing dumb things). OR it's an error on the writer's part, where they're ignoring the fact that Daryl and Rosita DO know better. Neither option is fair on the character of Denise, and means that viewers tend to find it frustrating. Like I said in a comment above, the same storyline could have played out but just with some extra thought behind it. Had she asked Daryl for some discreet ''training'', then him and Rosita could have orchestrated something that wasn't as dangerous as a literal supply run. This way, she could still have had the same conversation, with the same motivation, and the same death - but in an environment that would have felt less ''foolish''. Instead of a reckless supply run, they could have just been at a training session monitored by Rosita and Daryl. Ambushed by Dwight and co. This way, none of ''our'' guys look stupid. Hell, even Rosita looks silly for suggesting the tracks. I can agree with characters doing dumb things, and like I said - all three in this episode seem to be doing dumb things. That's completely fair enough, because mistakes are made, but my point was just to defend the frustration of the reactors. Because I find it just as frustrating. A counter argument could also be that Daryl and Rosita should know better at this point, but I'm aware that nobody is perfect. It should just have been handled better IMO.

@AmethystRock

I didn't feel bad for Abraham when him and Eugene argued. "Your services are no longer required- I don't need you anymore" is pretty much same as what Abraham told Rosita 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just thought it was sweet that Abraham was still in guard mode after everything that happened between them 😔 what he did to Rosita was really rubbish, he had no balls and just walked away! But hey...Rosita is single now 🥰

Yeah it could have been handled better most definitely, we’re in agreement on that, it’s probably one of the weaker episodes of the season in retrospect honestly. And I admit that the writers most likely were just trying to get the characters outside so they could remix a certain comic death, and didn’t properly set that up in a satisfying way either. But as I said before, it doesn’t bother me as much if a character makes a stupid decision so long as I understand their motivations and it’s not too out of character. Too many dumb decisions can take you out of it tho, so I know what you mean. Denise’s death is important storyline-wise as it puts into motion the chain of events that set up the final 2 episodes of season 6 and the major storyline of the next few seasons, so I can maybe forgive the writers a bit for not exactly sticking the landing of this episode at the end of the day. Thanks for the good discussion btw

Sooo excited for your reaction to the next few episodes, cant believe we are here already

Keith Duperreault

When Carol says "To us? They did nothing.", I think she is referring to the fact that The Saviors really haven't done anything to Rick's group that warranted the murderous rampage through their compound. The motorcycle group that tried to rob Daryl's truck, were killed by Daryl. The matter should be considered even..... what Rick's group did was to avenge Hilltop. The Saviors have done nothing to the people of Alexandria.

connie

I feel you on how you thought Denise was being reckless, and maybe that's true, but I understand why she wouldn't want to be the only one in that town with no experience. it can be dangerous to always rely on others. That said, it wasn't the smartest route, I think Rosita and Daryl should've told her to put a pin in this supply run and they'll help her train with walkers and stuff personally, before she goes out there, maybe in the woods to train more. not just a supply run off the bat.

Oh I was excited to hea rTrin theory on why Dwight could posibly have a scared face, shame she forgot. Great reaction as always guys!

~Trin, Yeah sorry about that, I got trapped in my brain with poor Denise death, I totally forgot to talk about my theory. So yeah in the previous episode Chelle said that she got her finger amputated because she stole gasoline I think, so I thought that was also some sort of punishement that Dwight got because he wanted to escape but yeah; who knows it could also be an accident, it's all dangerous everywhere in this apocalypse :)

I'm a getting scared

can't hardly wait til episode

Kimberly Wilmoth

Oh, I felt horrible for him. His friend told him "you've outlived your usefulness to me." That is an insanely harsh thing to say to someone that you care about, and someone who you previously fucked over in a big way.

Kimberly Wilmoth

No, she was speaking strictly of her and Maggie's situation with those particular saviors. She wasn't involved in the Outpost killings, so she's definitely talking about her own personal situation.

Kimberly Wilmoth

You guys have to remember, Denise told them that she was going whether they went or not, so them going with her was actually the right call.
