I am a Hospice Nurse and I work long hours. One week each month, I am on call 24/7, and I have to respond to any calls, even if the patient or caregiver is not mine, and I have to know my stuff, even if I have never laid eyes on that patient. The hardest part is when a patient finally passes away and I have to go and pronounce the death, call the coroner to report the death and get permission to release the body to the funeral home, then destroy any narcotics, and comfort the family while waiting for the funeral home to arrive. Hospital nurses technically work a "12" hour shift 7am to 7pm or 7pm to 7am , but in reality it is more like a "14" hour shift. You are expected to arrive 30 minutes before your shift starts so you can store your belongings, then meet the nurse who has your patients (usually 7-9) patients to 1 nurse, except on an Intensive Care Unit, then it's 2-3 patients. You get report on your patients, and then you and the off going nurse go to each room to do a hand-off by interducing yourself to each patient. Note: you can't leave until your replacement arrives even if they are an hour late, and if any procedure that is to be done on the shift you would be leaving, you have to stay and do it. Now, if we are going on 2 hours late, then the charge nurse has to relieve you. It's why I left the hospital scene to do Hospice. I have 15 patients maximum, and I group them by where they live and once I finish my visits for the day, I can go home. I generally get through my visits on Thursday and, then I spend Friday and Saturday at my local library so I can have a peaceful place to document my visits on my laptop. If I try to do documentation at home, I have to many distractions. I just thought I'd share a nurses work life since this episode dealt with this.
