Mephistopheles

This episode highlights perfectly well all the negative aspects of the internet and of social media. People use anonymity and "it's just a comment on the internet" as an excuse to write whatever they want, unconcerned of the consequences of their actions. They use the online world as a defence of their words. They feel like social media gives them the right to voice all of their opinions, especially the hateful ones, not giving a damn if they end up hurting other people in the process. But those that are on the receiving end of these insults are real people who get hurt just like anybody else, whose feelings are no different from those around them. Being able to let your opinion be heard through the internet should never be an excuse to trample on other people's lives; yet all too often, all too conveniently, humans will forsake any kind of respect and common decency just to bash whoever and whatever they don't like. It's easy to relate to Akane's feelings in that moment. Even more so for those of us who struggle with depression, who feel a situation is so overwhelming that there's no way out, and just want to be done with it all. When your mind is under so much strain that you can't think straight, common sense and logic don't enter the equation at all, and talking to other people about it doesn't even feel like a viable option. This episode is heavily inspired by a real-life event. I won't go into too much details, but if you're interested in knowing a bit more you should check out Kimura Hana and the Terrace House controversy.
