Sailor Moon came out in the early 90s and basically revitalised the "maho shojo" (magical girl) genre. There have been many before it, but Sailor Moon was the first one with a story that centered around "fighting evil" and a lot of girls picked up other shojo (female oriented) manga because of it. Basically, all those super sentai (think Power Rangers!) series were somewhat catered towards boys and Sailor Moon took that concept and appealed towards girls/women and it was thought of as empowering them. After Sailor Moon, dozens of "maho shojo" series with girls transforming into "super heroes" that fight evil spawned; the influence of the series is huge and it's one of the most successful manga of all time. Also, the author of Sailor Moon - Naoko Takeuchi is married to Yoshihiro Togashi, who has written Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter. Quite a pair!
