You were correct in thinking that Askeladd wanted Thors to be their leader, Askeladd was dead serious. His thought process behing asking Thors to lead them will make more sense later in season 1. Thors really did the best with what he had when he gave his life to Askeladd and his men. Had he killed Askeladd the archers more than likely would have fired and his remaining men would have rushed the boat putting Thorfinn and the other kids in serious danger. As a manga reader of Vinland Saga I can say without a doubt that Thors was by far the strongest warrior in the entire series, and although Askeladd lost his duel to Thors, Askeladd in his prime (in my opinion) ranks as the fourth strongest warrior in the entire series, so he's definitely not the kind of man to be taken lightly.
