Mephistopheles

This is gonna be a somewhat long comment, but I think this movie deserves it. There are many ways one could describe what they felt watching it, but I believe the one way to compress all of those into one sentence, is that Koe no Katachi leaves you broken. All of those characters, all of those situations, are so real and so vivid that we live them as if we were there ourselves. And depression is something that can never be overcome. You can fight through it, struggle, and, if you have someone beside you, rely on them. The two protagonists will forever be broken after what they’ve been through, nothing will ever change that, but that doesn’t mean they will stop moving forward, leaning on each other. This movie, just as the manga did, grips you by the heart and never lets go, showing you the pain and suffering anyone can be subjected to just for being “different”, “not like everyone else”. A thousand words cannot convey what this story did, so I won’t even try. A few parenthesis in regards to certain parts of the movie: 1) the “love”/“moon” part: in japanese “suki” means “to like/to love”, which is what Shouko said. On the other hand, “tsuki” means moon. They are somewhat different words, but the fact that Shouko is deaf leads to her mispronouncing certain words, or, at the very least, not pronouncing them correctly. Which is what led to the “suki”/“tsuki” misunderstanding; 2) during the fireworks scene, when Shouko answers why she’s going back home, your screen froze for a second and you missed her reply, but the audio kept playing. Ishida says “benkyou”, which means “to study”, basically saying she was going back home to study; 3) towards the end, when they give Ishida a “present” and say they wanted to make one thousand of those: those are origami cranes, and in japanese culture 1000 origami cranes are a symbol of hope, of recovery, usually given to people that are in the hospital after a serious accident or illness. One last comment about the studio which produced the anime: Kyoto Animation (KyoAni). KyoAni is a very particular studio, starting from the fact they are among the only 3 animation studios in Japan which pay their workers monthly salaries. This leads to them putting quality over quantity, releasing fewer anime compared to others, but whose quality cannot be beaten (Violet Evergarden, Clannad, Kyoukai no Kanata). This fact, coupled with the heart-wrenching, emotional tones of their anime, led to them being regarded as one of the most beloved studios by anime fans all over the world. The way the studio is run, compared to others using freelancers, makes it so that those working there do not see the anime they are working on as just “work”. They pour all of their hearts, love and passion into everything they do, and they don’t stop until what they create is the best anime they could have produced.

That sign Nishimiya makes with her pinkies interlocked can be seen as 'pinky promise', Shouko puts two hands together. Which stands for friends (友達). Which would come down to: "friends promise" And can be inteprated as "Promise to be friends forever".

EVERY time I see the elementary school fight scene and Shoko says "I'm trying my best", I get teary-eyed. I couldn't imagine how it felt for her to be at a new school, being bullied, physically assaulted, and deaf. She's such a kind person. There was so much hurt in that line that I constantly get emotional watching it.

Also, I'm super glad you watched this film because, from the crazy amounts of reactions I've watched from you, you understand and convey these emotions. You get frustrated and angry and emotional and don't hide it in your reactions. I love it. And that's why I've been subbed

Actual suicide happens all around the world because of bullying. Parents should be preventing and talking about it with their kids, this film is a great way to empathize and understund how far bullying can go. Kid can be evil, but they are just kid, they just need to learn. Anyway, it was a great reaction ! thank you :)

VanillaCoke1956 .

Still think Kawai is one of the worst people in this entire movie and she got away relatively easily. She participated in the bullying but acted like a victim all throughout.

I don't know if you noticed, but Ishida's mom's ear was bleeding when she went to apologize to Nishimiya's mom and I think its assumed that Nishimiya's mom ripped Ishida's moms earring out like Ishida did to Nishimiya's hearing aids

I'm japanese, so my english might be something awkward, but this movie is my favorite, so pls let me join the conversation. at 1:02:00, the reason why Nishimiya was crying is, (probably) because her right ear completely lost sense of hearing and it's past recovery. it is suggested by the scenes of the doctor told her something, and her removed hearing aid was shown on the bed. also Ueno mentioned NIshimiya uses only one hearing aid.
