Basically Gintama started off as 80% comedy and 20% drama, until later on it turned into 50% comedy and 50% drama. Most characters and events are based upon historical people and historical events, simply spun in a "Gintama" way. Also, the people in uniforms are members of the Shinsengumi, which was a real historical police force during the Bakumatsu period, which served the bakufu (aka the military government).

The other comments pretty much said everything, this show started in 2006 and just finished recently in 2021. It's an experience you won't find in any other anime, with a great mix of comedy and drama. And yea, those 3 are not related at all, but they develop a bond stronger than anything. Beware, if you ever watch it, it starts out slow as it introduces all the characters, but by the 30-35ish episode it starts to bang!
