Alright, hairpin explaination incomming! You can see it as something similiar to a valentines gift, the meaning behind it is mostly romantic but can have a more friendly meaning too. The Guy we see in this episode gave out multiple hairpins to the girls on the Garden Festival, not because he had romantic feelings for any of them but because of courtesy and politeness so they don't feel left out. That is why he said to himself "Yikes, did she take that consolation hairpin seriously?" it didn't had any deper meaning to him but it would be a possibility for him that Maomao shows interest in him. Then we have the Hairpin from Jinshi, at this point we don't really know if he has romantic intentions even tho it is hinted here and there, but we can assume that it is most likely to mark his territory in case someone else tries to give Maomao one too. As you could see, the Hairpin from Jinshi and Lihua were really fancy demonstrating their rank inside the palace so for someone lower ranked seeing those hairpins would probably back off to not get in trouble. Lastly we have the Hairpin form Lihua, she owes Maomao her life and would love to have Maomao in her own camp as a Lady in Waiting, so she kinda courts Maomao too but without the romantic aspect of it. The reason for Maomao to missunderstand the meaning behind it is her friend, it is true that workers inside the palace can't leave the place without someone to vouch for them and the hairpin can be used for exactly that but it is more to go on a date with the person and not just use the person. And last funfact because it troubled me personally, fingerprints were actually a thing in china since the 7th century, the western world started using them around 1900 so that is a interesting tidbit i didn't know either, on my first watch through i thought it was a bit too modern for that time but nope, it is actually a thing even tho i don't really know at what period the story actually centers. Another funfact, i am not too familiar with the traditions in china, but i suppose it is not too far off from Japan, there it is custom for girls to give out chocolate on valentines day and for boys to return the favour a couple of weeks later on white day, it is common that the girls give out a bunch of chocolate, to their crush, their friends and even those they don't really like but feel pitty for. If it is really fancy handmade chocolate the romantic intensions are more obvious, i suppose it is really similiar with the hairpin situation in china, that is why i thought about it. The more you know right?! As usual, it is just my personal interpretation i can not for sure say it is 100% right at all!

9:50 The way Gaoshun handled the hairpin implies that it is of much higher status than a hairpin a eunuch would have, even if in charge of things at the rear palace. Also Jinshi says Gaoshun was assigned to him at his birth, high rank implied again. 15:17 the way Gyokuyou said that could mean she took the person for a three day "homecoming" where they would be together the entire time. Romantic implications added by an impish courtesan to see Jinshi squirm.
