Now you entered the rabbithole/genre that is BL. It is not just Southeast Asian, I would just say Asian. Thailand might be heavily represented in this genre, but countries such as for example the Phillipines, Korea, Japan, Taiwan etc have many good ones too. You might sometimes need to understand some cultural aspects, to understand why some people in BLs act like they do( and some bls are more westernised). But I'm sure people will answer your questions along the way/tell you what they think you need to know, also if you get into other bls. This is one of the more heavy Bls( bls enter different genres, so some are more heavy and mature than others, and some are just cute, romantic and fluffy.) There are also so called GLs(Girls Love), and they are slowly making more and more of them as well, but so far Bls are more dominant.

I just watched another Thai series called Love-in-the-air, which is fluffier but very enjoyable and it has its more serious moments. It’s a two-part love story and is kinda rom-com in style. The first story is very good and very amusing at times. Btw, Jeff Satur singing the theme song from KinnPorsche, Why Don’t You Stay is fabulous, a great musician with a million dollar voice, in my opinion. There’s a Thai lyrics version as well as an English lyrics version and both are available on YouTube. The KinnPorsche World Tour video of him singing it is amazing.🤩

AHHH I am so pumped for your journey into BL. Welcome to the world of branded pairs, product placements, and worlds where honestly if you are straight you are the minority. Please come over the BL channel on Discord cause we would love to chat with you there and help answer questions. Kinnporsche is a doozy of a show but really embodies so much of Asian BL. The fact you are going into this blind is gonna be incredible. It has romance, comedy, crime, and all sorts of other stuff wrapped up in a Mafia bow but everything is gay! Really excited to give you some fun facts as you go along :) (Also quick note if you are concerned about underage all the characters are supposed to be in their 20s+. The only exception is Porchay (the younger brother). His actor was 17 at the time of filming so same as his character and underage.)

I love Porsches little brother Porschay, he is so cute and sweet and innoscent, and needs to be protected(Porschay protection squad hehe). Btw The first one to speak of porsches bodyguards/henshmen who came out of the cars when Porsche left Kinn after the motorcycle ride is actually half Thai half Australian, so in his roles they might get him to speak some english(his thai acting( nick)name in the industry is Perth but his Australian name is Stewart.)

Had to become a Patron for this one! I haven't watched very many bls so I'm not an expert on the genre or anything, but of the few I've seen this is one of my favorites! Now what I do watch more of is GLs (girl's love dramas) lol so I can confirm those exist. There's not nearly as many, but it's growing in popularity! GAP is my favorite, so maybe one day you'll check that one out lol If you get confused about the money thing just know that the numbers aren't as large as they sound. For example, the 2 Million Baht that the watch was worth equals to about $43k pounds or $55k USD.

Are you on the ASWT Discord? We have the official recommendations list on there. There are a load of great shows already on the list, and we can add any new ones that people bring to our MODs team (so long as they contain queer representation). As far as foreign queer films/series go, Alex and Josh have obviously reacted to Young Royals and Smiley before. So they are definitely open to foreign language media. It’s exciting that they are now dipping their toes into a show from outside the western queer media lens.

One thing to know about BL actors....most of them are older than they look. Earth (Cooheart) is almost 30 but can still play a high school student. A place to go for info on BL series/movies is My Drama List which is a Imdb for BL's it will give you so much info on the actors, series etc.

There are just so many good BL's and KinnPorsche is top tier. Info on Thai honorifics.....: Hia is used for older brother, but it can also be used for an endearment with a significant other if that s.o. is older. Hia is the older of the two and "nong" is the younger. "P" sometimes spelled "phi" (sounds like pea), is also for the older of the person being spoken to and nong is for the younger. Also "Hia" and "Phi" are used for those of Chinese ancestry. The use of Hia is more "formal" and "P or Phi" less formal more an everyday use among people who know each other. Watching BL's will give you insight into Thai culture. In another BL "Love In The Air" (so good and oh my the nc scenes are yummy), the characters are P' Payu and Nong Rain, now Rain uses P' Payu when speaking to him but Payu does not use the nong honorific with Rain. It all depends on how the two feel and or are comfortable with the honorifics. If they were in formal setting then yes the honorifics would be used. Just a bit of info that I have learned from watching Thai BL's. Just wait until you get to S Korean, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines BL's....lol Oh and here is a run down of what country does about the intimate scenes. Japan: maybe a kiss, maybe. Although they have stepped up the game a little. S Korea is getting bolder in their intimate scenes...I actually saw a bl couple that had them in bed....shock.lol. Taiwan is wanting to set a new bar and of course Thailand is no holds barred. Kinn Porsche was the series that broke the rules when it came to NC scenes and now all the new bl's are trying to meet that bar and go above it. Yummy! Philippines has nothing to mention as I have only seen maybe 1 or 2 bl's from there most notably Game Boys which is awesome. Okay, enough for now.

Love in the Air was my second BL after Kinnporsche. Love the show and I definitely subscribe the headcannon of Phayu and Prapai being the adopted kids of the KP characters. LITA is like baby KP and more fluffy :)

On the subject of Thailand, it’s set to be the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage according to what I have read in recent news. The legislation is expected to be approved fairly soon, after already going through the Lower House.

For reference, the stick that Porsche shoves up his nose before the fight isn't poppers or any other illegal drug, it's a herbal nasal inhaler. They're apparently quite popular in Thailand. Related, there is A LOT of product placement in Thai TV shows, and I definitely remember a scene where the name of the brand of inhaler was shown quite prominently. Not sure if it was KinnPorsche or a different show.

Well, y'all made my day with this...I love this show and am so glad you seemed excited to watch it. I'm interested to see Josh navigate a Mafia story with characters who all have trouble with boundaries. Josh should also be interested in chess metaphors...when the father ( Mr. Korn) says he's now got the last piece (Porsche) he's putting the Queen on the board, and that's not an accident. Another thing this show does well is the music...the little music cues are all very apt, as well as a couple great songs.

When I first started watching Thai shows, I was shocked at how heavy handed and obvious the product placement was...but this show does it better than any other I've seen. So many showers, and bread, and Maseratis, and instant ramen, and inhalers, and hair coloring.... And I so wanted to buy the bread by the end of the show.

There are GL series series - in the last few years in Thailand they’ve become a lot more popular and common - even the big production companies are starting to focus on them. BL very much used to be a cheap and easy cash grab - it was always about boys in school or college (hence why it’s boy love and not man love) but over the years the fanbase has grown and aged up and it’s much rarer to see those cute fluffy school/university storylines anymore - we’ve got a lot of fantasy and mafia plots instead. It’s a really fascinating industry that lot of people have a mixture of feelings on. There’s truly no industry in the western world to compare it to.

At least they didn‘t put random scenes into KinnPorsche just to show the product. When I saw this the first time, that the main characters suddenly and out of nowhere started to clean each others faces with some product - I just couldn‘t believe it. And the stortytelling is generally very different in bls compared to western media. I needed some time to get used to it.

One of my favorite things about bl is the way the queerness is just part of the story. Like yes, they're about gay men, but they all have some other plot and the gayness is almost not important or not the focus. Most western gay media still is all about the experience of being gay, and coming out, and societal acceptance. All of which are important to see I'm media, but it is so refreshing to have other plots.

As it's still Pride Month, may I just say one of the actors in the series is a proud out and loud activist and a fantastic single father to a boy he adopted . Two years ago he took a big Pride flag from a member in the audience and waved it on stage (during their Tour abroad in Asia) which was daring and heartwarming . KP is not just a successful series, it's also a saga in real life, with its amazing and also dramatic or ugly moments, and it almost never came into existence . Which is why some old fans like me can sometimes sound a little obsessed...

I became a patron to watch these KP reactions with the additional hope that your "jump into BL" means that you will do more! There are lots of BL reactions but I love how thoughtful and humorous you guys are. I have heard before that BL does not always equal queer media because it is a genre originally created by and catering to straight women. Therefore the stories are often female fantasies (plus rom-com and manga tropes) rather than authentic queer stories. I feel that's fair, but I'm also curious to see how those concepts overlap and I'm interested to see your take on the genre. I also wonder if Asian BLs will reflect queer stories more authentically in the future as they gain popularity.
