It feels like every few years or so YouTube releases a new policy which makes alot of stress for creators for a little while, then leaves us to deal with the fallout. (Remember COPPA back in 2019?!)

This time, YouTube has seen it fit to de-monetise any sounds which are 'sexually gratifying'.....fill in the blanks to that ambiguous phrase as you will because we all certainly have!

Whilst I don't have a problem with this new 'law' necessarily, the problem I have is YouTube's absolute lack of understanding of what ASMR is and blanket flagging of videos.

Like, aside from the obvious 'audio p*orn' - what the hell would they flag as 'sexually gratifying' on an ASMR video?! Like, there are people out there who have married and believe they are in a sexual relationship with the empire state building for goodness sake...! Anyone can find anything 'sexually gratifying'.

So now we all must tread on egg shells once more to second guess everything we create for fear of being de-monetised or even banned from youtube.

I am SO GLAD that I have this platform to share content I WANT to make without fear of being kicked off it!

I know that some of you will be missing your favourite content creators videos as they pull them from YouTube, so, what would YOU like to see me make on here which may upset YouTube; because f*ck em! :D

I've been desperately looking for a good alternative to YT for a while now. We can only dream

Ok, I thought about this for a while and I think I have something to say. Here goes. I remember the original days of asmr, it was all so new and experiential. A handful of artists experimenting with tactile noises and whispers. Those were good days, and almost nobody has heard of asmr. Then it started hitting the mainstream and a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon. ASMR has become a lot of things to a lot of people. I suspect that quite a lot of people who now watch ASMR, and probably quite a few who produce it have never had a single tingle. Maybe they just find it relaxing, maybe it's just a revenue stream. But what I see a lot of on YouTube, is what you would call, flirty asmr (I won't call it asmr porn because asmr porn is a whole other thing, and that's fine because at least it admits it (side note, there are some really talented porn actors who make traditional asmr and are really good at it, is it an acting thing or a sensual thing?)). Sorry now I'm waffling. My point is that if you search for asmr on YouTube these days the search results can be 90 percently flirty stuff. Maybe they aren't happy with that. I imagine that traditional asmr is a big revenue maker for YouTube - plenty of people I know have YouTube premium to avoid adds in asmr vids. Let's be clear, whispering into an ear, or licking something isn't porn. Is it flirtatious? It can be. If that's the way YouTube want to go, then fine. There's clearly a demand for all kinds of asmr. What would I like to see on Patreon? Anything that gives me goosebumps down the spine.

I think that your Patreon is growing at a pace that makes you happy these days. You must already be making content that your viewers like. Just keep going. 💙

Mr. Mike Shea

Another year, another YT policy that tries to funnel ASMR in with sexual content and I'm so sick of it I could actually vomit.

Spit painting / mouth sounds us always good

Sounds ridiculous to me! Hopefully it’ll just allow you to bring your best content to Patreon, though!

Some office based shenanigans would be nice.

I absolutely agree with you David! I actually only watch 'old school' ASMR exclusively these days as its the only thing that relaxes me and gives me tingles. Mostly its stuff where you can't see the creators face, only their hands. They are SO good but their sub and view count is non-existent which is so sad. I really hope that a positive can come of this shake up and that more traditional ASMR gets the limelight. My little experiment on youtube where I wore a low cut top just goes to prove that despite being on YouTube for almost 10 years doing ASMR, you show a bit of skin and people lose their damn minds.

Haha! I really wish I liked this trigger but it makes me feel super grossed out haha! Trauma from my grandparents I think when I was little of them trying to wipe of dirt from my face from their denture riddled spit hahahaha!

It must be a tricky situation to be in. I mean you put so much into your channel, you need the numbers to keep it going. You and visualsounds1 are the two best proper asmrartists out there and yet (no names mentioned in case they are friends of yours) show some skin and get crazy numbers. Honestly, if I were you I would see it as a purely business decision and use youtube however possible to improve my income. Just treat it like a job. And if you're not happy with how it goes, step back and re assess. I think Ally really with it best with this one: https://youtu.be/ToFjQ-rjiBw Funniest asmr vid ever!

They do seem to like keeping creators guessing, so it’s no wonder you and others are looking at alternative platforms. Maybe just keep YT for the “safe” videos to help build the following and use Patreon for the more out there, experimental stuff. You’re by far the best ASMRtist I’ve found and I’m sure many others would agree, so paying a little extra for content will never be an issue :) In terms of actual ASMR suggestions, I’ve always loved the idea of a tattoo parlour style role-play video. Start with a specific conversation about the tattoo you’re about to do, then it could literally be an hour of you just generally chatting about anything with the tattoo gun going in the background. Also, slightly left-field here, but I really loved the Timelapse videos you’ve occasionally put out (usually on insta stories I think) showing you assembling and disassembling the sets for your role-plays. I’ve no idea why I found them so relaxing but they were really good!

Part of the problem is ASMR, as a term, is used in multiple ways. There is ASMR porn, sexy ASMR videos (that are short of being porn), ASMR pretend girlfriend (and maybe boyfriend) videos, flirty ASMR videos, relaxing ASMR videos and tingly ASMR videos, and mixes of these, but most of these aren't really ASMR. I think it has to be in the relaxing or tingly category to be ASMR personally, but everyone's definition is different I guess, and it is a label that is applied to some only vaguely related things. I imagine real ASMR, like you make, is a massive source of revenue for YouTube because it is a huge reason to buy Premium. Your videos were probably the reason I first bought it, and I still have it (there are a lot of things I watch/listen to on YouTube to fall asleep now that I used to get from elsewhere so I use it for them now, and for the convenience of being able to watch your videos on there too). I can understand YouTube wanting to discourage advertiser-unfriendly sexy stuff. I guess they also want to discourage stuff that seems weird, which, let's face it, ASMR stuff often is - we often don't have a good idea why we like it/find it relaxing, and I think people often assume it is about sex if they don't know. The fact that it is easier to get more clicks on YouTube to start with if you have a pretty face probably feeds that, as most creators are good looking or made up heavily. I guess part of it is YouTube being scared of stuff that is hard to understand because they think it is about sex in some way too. Ultimately I think it just hastens the day that something else replaces YouTube TBH, and I'm glad you make things on here. That said, I suspect most or all of what I like that is ASMR (rather than stuff mislabeled as ASMR that isn't really, which I like at times, but which is different) is probably allowed, and it is stuff that is intended to be sexy rather than relaxing that will fall foul of the rule change.
