Up until this episode, I’ve found myself enthusiastically rooting for Napoleon. Like, I knew he was a bastard, but I wanted to see him win, you know? Sort of like watching the rise of Michael Corleone. But with Napoleon’s treatment of Haiti, and especially Louverture, I can no longer stan him. Which probably tells me I shouldn’t have been so emotionally invested in him in the first place. Being an impartial student of history is hard.

There have been many other instances where Napoleon's vision of "pragmatism" meant arguably unwarranted constraint / suffering for the losers in his calculations. His decisions on Haiti are a much darker mark, even aside from the intensity of the racialized suffering there. Napoleon bowed to conservative/market/strategic interests before, but what a special failure in visionary leadership here, to be confronted with this populist energy / potential and, instead of bravely grappling with it, scurrying off to the safety of the contemptible planter class.
