In the Spring of 1808, Napoleon installed his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne. However, the people of Madrid had had enough of the French, and took matters into their own hands.

Thank you Everett for such a brilliant narrative of this unfortunate episode of my beloved country Spain. I am fascinated about Napoleon but truth is that our country was torne into pieces because of him (most probably the country that was left more in ruins after the Napoleonic wars is Spain). Truths is as well that we were not doing well and that had the country be left in the hands of the infamous “Choricero”, who knows if things would have gotten worse… To see it positively it did bring us Goya and its marvelous paintings! Your podcast is top Quality. I promised an additional donation to my quota as Maréchal some time ago and I will soon deliver. Keep it up! KR, Pablo T.

Hi Everett, in this episode you said that a contingent of German troops were dispatched to assist in quelling the uprising. I've often wondered about the motivation of foreign troops to fight under French command. In earlier episodes it was clear that part of the reason the French army was so successful was because of the citizen soldier model, versus the coercive model other armies adopted. Could Napoleon rely on foreign troops of conquered regions to fight under the French flag? How capable and motivated were they to carry out French orders?

What are the French wearing in the painting you referenced? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_of_May_1808 Always thought of the Grand Armee in blue and red. And May in Spain... Those uniforms looks like they'd be too hot

ageofnapoleon

They are wearing their greatcoats. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grande_Arm%C3%A9e_-_Light_Infantry_Officers_in_Greatcoats.jpg French army greatcoats varied a bit in color, but were generally some shade of gray or light brown, like you see in the painting. It can get down to the 40s Fahrenheit in Madrid in May, so maybe not so implausible

Another great episode as usual! I very much enjoyed your specialised episodes on the infantry and cavalry. So far, I think the episode on the artillery is still missing. Will you do that episode as well?

ageofnapoleon

Yes. I did those past two specialized episodes when I was moving and didn't have access to all my books, so I guess the artillery episode will be coming up the next time I move
