"UNMET DESIRES"

"Fuck, Kate! Are you fucking serious?!" Derek's voice boomed, echoing off the walls. "I've got goddamn cat fur all over my fucking clothes again!"

Kate looked up, her eyes a mix of defiance and hurt. "Derek, please, just look at her. She's so sweet, someone just dumped her like rubbish..."

"Hell, Kate, to you they're all 'sweet', but this cramped apartment isn't a fucking cat sanctuary!" Derek's frustration was palpable. "I'm sick of it! I can't even leave the house without people snickering, calling me the 'guy who shacked up with the crazy cat lady'."

His words cut through Katherine like a knife. Tears welled up in her big, green eyes, as a wave of sadness overwhelmed her. How could he be so heartless? She tried to speak but choked on her words, her heart aching for the innocent creatures she couldn't turn away...
