Powerful Measures

In the quiet late at night in the mountains, I heard a noise, like a crunching sound, like wood scraping against wood. The eerie sound frightened me differently.

It was probably the same for those in the other room.

"...Camsin, are Till and Arte sleeping?"

"The sound has been going on for minutes now. Maybe they are awake..."

Camsin replied and started to move slowly toward the doorway. The base we built this time is a one-story house, with no basement or second floor. There is a living room in the front and one bedroom on each side.

As a result of building several bases, this one was the easiest when it came to just taking a rest. Incidentally, the base for His Majesty has a waiting room for the Royal Guards and a bedroom in the back. Both the bedroom and the waiting room were quite spacious, but they were evaluated quite favorably.

The layout of the base was designed specifically for resting. It could not be used as a defense base, even if it stood up against the elements.

Camsin, who understands this, took his time and carefully opened the bedroom door. It was a feat of skill that he didn't make a sound at all. Camsin left from the bedroom in a masterful movement, as if he was a professional thief.

While I was staring at his back, I heard a loud noise coming from the doorway, as if he had timed it perfectly. Camsin's back, which had been moving with great care, jumped at the roar as if he was about to kick the door down.

"...!?"

Raising an inaudible voice, Camsin froze in place. But in the meantime, the sound of an attempt to forcibly pry open the door echoed through the room.

"You can't open the lock, can you?"

The door was bolted from the inside. It was all made of wood block. However, it was not something that could be easily broken.

While I was thinking this, a black bar appeared from a gap in the door. It lifts the bar-shaped wood block that is the bolt up.

"What? What is that? Isn't that cheating?"

I couldn't help but poke my head in. If this is the case, I should have used a bolt that can be moved sideways.

But there was no use thinking about it now. In the meantime, the door was easily opened.

"Van-sama, please do not leave the bedroom.

Camsin said this without looking at me and readied his sword. Perhaps he intended to slash at us the moment we entered the base. He bent his knees slightly and kept his posture low. Seeing the strength in his hand gripping the hilt of the sword, my hand involuntarily tightens as well.

But the next moment Camsin was about to move, a roar, almost like an explosion, rang out in the doorway. The sound reverberated inside the room, causing my ears to ache.

I'd like to figure out what happened, but I won't know what's going on until I get to the doorway. If I could get to just behind Camsin, who was low to the ground, would I be able to see him?

I looked at Camsin's face, and for some reason, I saw an expression akin to a wry smile on his face. Then he looked back at me.

"You are awake after all, Arte-sama."

"What? Arte?"

Hearing Camsin's words, I unconsciously headed for the doorway. As I turned my head to look outside, I saw a pair of Silver Knight operated by Arte standing in a line across the doorway.

"Hey, what the...! ?"

Someone's shout could be heard from outside, followed by a yelling voice echoing from the distance.

"What the hell are you people!?"

"Capture them immediately!"

Such a voice was soon followed by the sound of a violent struggle. The sound of metal clanging against metal echoes well in the quiet night.

"Van-sama, are you safe?"

After the noise outside, Till and Arte approached, keeping a wary eye on their surroundings; Arte was accompanied by a doll in Mithril's armor at her side.

"I'm fine. Thank you."

I respond and sheathe my twin swords. I am both happy and sad...Arte was the one I could rely on the most right now.

"I think I'll train a little more as well."

More time for training by Dee? I muttered a small thought as I thought about that. Then Camsin nodded with a serious face.

"I'll join you."

I chuckled and nodded at Camsin's words. This one did not seem to be joking.

Meanwhile, a noisy voice came from outside.

"Van-sama!?"

It was Dee. I waved one hand in reply to Dee, who appeared with beads of sweat on his forehead.

"I'm fine. Did you catch the intruder?"

I asked, and Dee pulled her chin back with a bitter expression on her face.

"It seems some Knights were leading them away. Unfortunately, we missed them. However, we have an inkling."

His voice sounded as if it was coming from the depths of the earth, and I was more scared of him than what happened. He must be very frustrated that he missed it. I laughed dryly and shook my head from side to side.

"It can't be helped, I asked Dee to help with the march, so you weren't around. Still, I'm surprised you got here so fast."

"I overtook the marching ranks all by myself."

Saying this, Dee chuckles.

"Thank you. Dee is a very dependable guy."

"Hahaha! Next time, I'm going to beat those suspicious people to the punch!"

Dee smiled broadly as she thanked him. I smiled back at him and imagined the knights that Dee would have passed by, ignoring their ranks.

"...I'll apologize to them later."

I muttered with a wry smile, imagining the complaints that would be raised by the other nobles.
