[Claire PoV] My Big Sis

My name is Claire.

I am a 13-year-old village girl living in Feld village. My family consists of my father, mother, and Big Sis.

When I heard that Big Sis had wandered off into the woods, I went looking for her, afraid she might fall over again.

Big Sis usually takes a nap in her favorite spot in the northern forest.

As I had expected, Big Sis was napping in a ruin-like place lined with stone pillars.

When I questioned Big Sis, who was acting suspiciously for some reason, she told me that she had found the ruins by chance.

I think Big Sis' expression is too easy to understand.

Having heard about my father's exploits as an adventurer, I wanted to take a look there and forced Big Sis to let me venture there.

I was stunned when I saw Big Sis easily channeling magic into the magic circle. I had heard that it is not that easy to do.

Big Sis told me to try it just to make sure I could return home alone, and it was indeed not that difficult.

At first there was no danger, and we were in a good mood as we found gold coins along the way and continued our search.

But it was getting dark if we didn't go home soon, so we decided to check one more room and go home.

--I should have stopped.

In that last room we were supposed to do, we were attacked by a very scary demon.

Up until now, Big Sis had been standing in front of me, but the excitement of finding the gold coins and the urgency of having to leave soon caused me to quickly move forward.

Imitating Big Sis, I put my ear to the door. I didn't hear a sound, so I opened the door, looked around the room, and entered.

Big Sis suddenly pulled me back and I fell flat on my back.

At that moment, the statue in the room jumped and attacked where I had been standing. As soon as I saw it, I became very scared and couldn't move.

The statue kept attacking Big Sis, who was protecting me, and Big Sis easily avoided it, but the weapon she was holding was a wooden sword, and hitting the statue didn't seem to be working at all.

"Step back a little bit at a time!"

I was told, and I decided to step back, even if it meant crawling across the floor to get out of Big Sis' way.

I managed to reach the door of the cathedral and turned around to check on Big Sis.

The statue's sharp attack hit her, and I saw lots of blood splattering from Big Sis's stomach.

"Big Sis!"

I called out to her, but she only told me to back off for good.

It made me sad to think that Big Sis was in trouble because of me and there was nothing I could do about it.

...Yes, I have recovery magic.

Big Sis sometimes comes back with a lot of scratches when she goes to the forest, and I was worried about her, so I asked the sisters to teach me. It was only three days ago that I managed to use it. I've heard that it's more effective if you use it on contact, but it might help Big Sis if you just apply it from a distance.

I started to concentrate and formulate my magic, trusting in Big Sis.

Suddenly, the presence of Big Sis changed.

The sharpened magic of the wind.

It was swept away by the wooden sword in Big Sis's hand.

"[Vento Spada]!"

She slashed a statue with a wooden sword!

How did she do that?

"I won't let you touch Claire one bit!"

As a finishing blow, she chased after the statue, and the statue was cut in half, up and down.

The statue no longer moved.

Instantly, Big Sis sat up with a blue face. I knew she was badly wounded!

"Big Sis!"

I ran up to her and used all the magic I had kneaded and continued to cast [Guardigione] magic on Big Sis.

Perhaps because the room was filled with light magic, I noticed that even the recovery magic I had just learned was having a strong effect.

Perhaps the pain had subsided somewhat, but Big Sis started to say something, turned bright red, and fell asleep. She must have been drained because she had applied the recovery magic to a place where the wounds were deep.

...If Big Sis had been a man, I would have fallen in love with her during the fight. She was that cool.

I sat beside Big Sis for a while, but there was no sign that anything more was going to happen.

The magic of light has strong power to ward off evil and blessings. This room is full of light magic, so there should be no danger as long as we don't do anything strange like we did earlier.

As I looked at the statue she fought, I noticed something glowing. I crouched down and saw a blue glass ball had fallen.

Probably an item dropped by the demon. I'd better pick it up.

Come to think of it, Big Sis called this demon [Living Statue], but I wonder how she knew about it. Is he secretly studying it somewhere?

After a while, Big Sis woke up and we decided to go home.

When I arrived home, my father and mother were worried and came out to look for me.

While we were eating dinner, dad asked me some questions, which I answered honestly.

I guess it was because Big Sis was injured, but neither of them got angry with me.

When Big Sis was wiping her body, complaining that wiping was not enough to remove the blood, her father got water for the bath and boiled it for her.

That day, I got kind of scared, and sneaked into the bed where Big Sis was sleeping.

I was soon discovered, but she hugged me tightly.

Perhaps it was because I had consumed a lot of magic power, but I felt safe and fell asleep right away.

--The next day

When I woke up, it was already noon. I must have used too much magic power.

When I was getting ready to go to church, Big Sis looked like she was up to something again. She seems to have taken out a piece of paper and a pen and started writing something.

Big Sis was working quietly and earnestly, and even I, a woman, was aghast at her beauty.

I know that even the boys in the village sometimes hold their hands still when Big Sis passes by.

But please don't act like you are avoiding Big Sis because you are embarrassed to be admiring her. I won't bother to tell Big Sis about it.

I don't know what Big Sis is up to, but I can't keep watching her all day.

I hurried to the church.

Since the arrival of the current sisters at the church, they have been teaching the children of the village how to study and do magic every week.

In the mornings I teach the little ones to read, write, and do math, and in the afternoons we study magic. Those who wish to join us gather and are taught various things. After that, the students who didn't understand something or who wanted to learn more would stay behind.

Considering what happened yesterday, I wanted to be taught attack magic, but it is dangerous for children to handle it, so it is not allowed to be taught without permission in this village church. It's a pity, but if it's a rule, then it can't be helped.

The basic study session is scheduled once a week, but students who are willing may come to study during the free time of the sisters.

The Sisters' convenient times are written in the church, so I left after confirming that this week's study time would be the same as usual.

In the evening, when I returned home after studying, Big Sis was unusually at home cooking with mother.

I wondered if mother told her not to go out today since she was badly injured.

"Oh, you're home. I cooked dinner for us today!"

"What an unusual dish. Did you hear about it from a merchant?"

It seems she made a dish that even her mother didn't know about.

"Hmmm..." she said proudly. Big Sis looks so proud of herself, her beautiful face is broken, but she is so charming and cute. Mom says that when I am confident, I make a similar face.

She told me that I am indeed her sister. I was a little happy to see that I am similar to Big Sis, who usually looks like a pain in the neck, but can do anything if she puts her mind to it.

But Big Sis's needlework is different.

Just looking at her hands makes me feel like I'm going to have a hole in my stomach. Why doesn't she ever stab her hand with that thing?

Dinner was a spicy broth over rice.

It was spicy, but so good that I couldn't stop eating it. I heard that it tastes good not only on rice, but also on thinly baked bread.

When I asked her what the name of the dish was, Big Sis had a bit of trouble and said, "Mock Curry".

Both father and mother liked it.

I'm sure this is something my mom will make once in a while after she hears the recipe.

...Big Sis is fickle, so I can't count on it.

I went to my own bed that night, but I couldn't sleep well.

Big Sis is not saying anything yet, but I think she will leave the village and go to town, saying that she will become an adventurer when she comes of age.

I secretly asked her father and mother about it, and they said that if Big Sis really says so, they will gladly send her off to town.

I will also be an adult next fall.

If I tell Big Sis that I want to follow her and become an adventurer, I think my father and mother will probably allow me to do so. That's why I worked so hard to learn recovery magic.

That's what I thought until yesterday.

But when it came time to fight demons, I couldn't do anything.

Still, Big Sis is kind and will stay with me if I request her to go with me.

But what if that happens again?

If Big Sis dies because of me and I am the only survivor, I will regret it for the rest of my life.

When I glance at Big Sis, I feel as if Big Sis is on the other side of me more than usual.

I felt lonely and wondered if this is the distance between my heart and Big Sis now, but then I realized that since I had entered Big Sis's bed yesterday, she was leaving space for me in case I might come in again today.

I hesitated for a moment, but sneaked into Big Sis's bed again today. Big Sis noticed and hugged me like yesterday.

"Hey, Big Sis."

"Hmm?"

"Do you think I can be strong?"

"Yes, but you still have a long way to go."

Big Sis answered as if nothing had happened.

It was such a quick answer that it seemed silly to dwell on the question alone.

I still couldn't decide whether to become an adventurer or not, but I was going to start working hard again tomorrow, no matter what I chose. I closed my eyes, reassured by his words.
