The World of Picture Books

"Aah! Hyah! Nggh!"

Jeanette, Ferris, and Alicia let out a yelp as they crashed to the ground.

It felt as if they had fallen from a very high place, so Ferris was bracing herself for a very painful fall, but it did not hurt that much. The ground was softer and fluffier than a bed mat. It looked like an ordinary field, but it was not.

Ferris looked around carefully and saw that the flowers looked like graffiti and there were cute faces painted on them.

"Where am I...? We were in the attic just now...?"

Jeanette's heart almost stopped instantly when she saw Ferris get up and turn around. And in a good way, too.

"Cu-cu-cu..."

Jeanette stared at Ferris, her hands trembling.

Her gaze fell on Ferris, who had rabbit ears on his head, a rabbit tail on his little butt, and was dressed like a fluffy bunny.

"It's sooooo cute!"

"HHYAAAAHHHHHHHH?"

Jeanette was holding her as hard as she could, and Ferris screamed, rubbing her cheeks against her ears and swinging her around in his arms. Alicia warns her, "You're going to have to do better than that.

Alicia warns her.

"Jeanette, if you swing around too much, you will tear Ferris to pieces"

"Oh, yes, you're right.... I'm sorry."

Jeanette came to her senses and lowered Ferris to the ground.

"Oh, it's okay..."

Ferris wobbled and clung to Alicia's arm.

Jeanette looked over at Alicia and let out a small gasp.

"Are you dressed like that, play-doh? I doubt that's what you're supposed to be doing at twelve!"

"Wow! Alicia-san, you are so beautiful!"

Yes, not only Ferris, but even Alicia looked different from before, with shining rainbow-colored wings on her back and a graceful green robe on her body. A fairy, a woodland fairy, with Alicia's dainty face, she brought a dreamy beauty to the scene.

"Jeanette like that is turning into a lovely cat, too."

Alicia pointed out, and Jeanette looked down at her body.

She was wearing a black one-piece dress with a wide opening at the bust and a barely trimmed hem. She was wearing adult-like net tights, black loafers, and black gloves. Her tail was taut from her hips, and cat ears sprouted from her head. It is a bold and revealing design, but it suits Jeanette, who has an outstanding style.

Why am I always dressed like this? Why am I the only one dressed like this ------?

Jeanette shrank back, hugging herself with teary eyes. Her face was bright red with shame. No matter how strong a young lady she is, she is still twelve years old. It is a little early for her to climb the ladder of adulthood.

But Ferris clasps her hands around her chest and says enthusiastically.

"Jeanette-san, you look wonderful! You look like an adult woman! I admire you so much!"

"Oh, I don't know if that's true! I think you're right! It's the outfit for me, just for me!"

Jeanette was simple. She instantly shook off her shame and stretched out her back with dignity.

Alicia stared at Jeanette.

"Why are you staring at me? You seem to want to say something!"

"It's just my imagination."

"No, it's not my imagination!"

"By the way, Jeanette, can you take off those ears? I couldn't get the feathers off..."

"...what? I'm sure you can take them off, they're an accessory.

Jeanette pulled her cat's ears carelessly. Immediately, she crouched down as a tremendous pain shot through her head.

"What the...? Why?"

"I'll try it too...ei! Yay!"

Ferris pulls on the rabbit ears growing on his head, but they still won't come off. It hurts so much that she cries. Alicia hurries to stop Ferris, who still continues to pull.

"This... it's not an accessory, and it's sentient...? It's really growing out of our bodies..."

"Oh, no, that's not funny! A daughter of the Rheinzlich family, you know, turned into a cat! Your father will scold you!

"I don't think it's a matter of being scolded or anything..."

As the three were puzzled.

From the distance, a large group of creatures rushed toward them, billowing up a cloud of dust.

The three of them involuntarily jumped into the nearby bushes to hide themselves.

The creatures were all in the shape of alphabets. Their bodies were exactly like the letters. They had small arms and legs, eyes and mouths attached to them, and they were running around, talking to each other constantly.

"Oh no! Oh no! We'll never make it in time!" Hurry up! Hurry up to the next page!" Are you certain this is in the right order? "What's the point of all this? The period should be at the end!"

With a loud "wow!" the hordes of letters rushed in and then rushed out in a deluge.

On the trampled grassland, Ferris and the other three crawled fearfully out of the bushes.

"Oh, those demons...have you seen them before?"

"I've never seen one of those in any of the reference books I've read..."

Jeanette and Alicia were stunned.

Ferris, who was looking up at the sky, gave a small clap.

"Ah! Could this place be in a picture book?

"In a picture book...? What kind of joke is this?

"I'm not kidding! Look, there's the sky! The clouds are the same shape as the ones on the cover of the picture book I saw in the attic earlier! And this field looks just like the cover of the picture book..."

"Speaking of which..."

Alicia looks around slowly.

Jeanette also looks around.

And then I found it. She has found it.

On the ground, the name of the author of the picture book is inscribed in large letters.

Jeanette's face pales.

"So, so, so, we're really...?"

"Maybe it was some kind of magic item...the picture book we just saw. Perhaps it had some kind of magic that swallowed anyone who opened it..."

"What are you going to do? Can we get out of here?

Alicia claps her hands together.

"Oh yes, I have heard that before. I've heard that if a person who has been divinely hidden doesn't get out of that other space quickly, she or she can become an inhabitant of that place. I'm just remembering it now, so don't worry about it."

"Why are you remembering such a scary thing now?

"You're scaring me!"

Jeanette and Ferris shuddered.

The sky was filled with clouds that looked like cobbler buns, and smiling flowers were blooming in the meadow. It was a very fairy-tale landscape, not a very frightening place, but Jeanette would not want to live in a place like this for the rest of her life.

She thinks a little that she might like to stay with Ferris, who has ears like a cow... but then she dismisses the thought that she and Ferris would like to go to more places.

Ferris raises his hands and shouts.

"Mr. Magus! Get us out of here!"

But nothing happens.

"Ferris's magic doesn't work...?"

Jeanette is stunned.

"Maybe it's because we're in a different space and the laws are different from the normal world..."

"Then there's nothing we can do about it!"

"What should I do... what should I do...?"

Ferris shook his head.

Let's go see Kuma-san!

"Let's go see Kuma-san!"

"Kuma-san?"

Jeanette tilted her head.

"Yes! The title of this picture book is "Happy Kuma-san", right? Then I think Kuma-san is the main character! I'm sure he knows more about this world than anyone else!"

"I see... you mean he might be able to teach us how to escape from the picture book?"

"Yes! No, right? No, I guess not..."

Ferris looks up at Jeanette and Alicia with concern. She was not sure about his idea.

Jeanette and Alicia looked at each other.

"No, it's not! It's a good idea! It's Ferris!"

"Yes. I can't think of any other way, so let's just go for it. We have to act first.

"Thank you very much!"

The three girls took each other's hands and began to walk through the world of the storybook.
