[Another Viewpoint] Siblings
[Murcia]
I led everyone to the castle keep, the center of the fortress, while being laughed at by all who were walking with me. I was so embarrassed that my face was on fire, but it was probably a good thing in the end because His Majesty, Venturi, and the other heads of the higher nobility began to talk to me in various ways.
Apparently, they all thought I was confident in my ability to manage and defend the fortress.
Personally, I thought I was just a pathetic older brother bragging about what my younger brother, who is more than ten years older than me, had built as if it were his own, but it appears that things turned out for the better.
Relieved from the bottom of my heart, I looked back after climbing the last flight of stairs, Venturi and His Majesty coming up in turn, and was immediately taken aback by the spectacular view.
I immediately understood their current emotions. As is the case on all floors, there are sturdy doors on every window while allowing the use of ballistas and mechanical bows from anywhere. In other words, the view inside the castle is just a series of dimly lit rooms, corridors, and stairs, despite the interesting structure.
However, once up in the keep, the doors open to the fullest extent in all directions, and the sun shines brightly. Furthermore, the Wolfsburg Mountains in the rear are not included, but the sky in the other directions is a beautiful blue sky.
As if attracted by the blue sky, His Majesty and the others proceeded to the terrace area. And then, they were amazed at the sight.
"Oh, wow!"
"This is wonderful!"
Hearing such voices, they went out to the terrace in the same way. I had seen this view many times, but I was still impressed by it.
In the back, there is a bright blue sky and a plain that can be seen all the way to the horizon, and the road continues as if cutting through the land. In the foreground is the beautiful castle town that has just been renovated. Looking to the left and right, a portion of the Wolfsburg Mountains can be seen at the edge of the field of vision, and a pleasant breeze flows through the air.
After climbing up a long flight of stairs with a sense of entrapment, I came to this view. As I have experienced myself, this sense of freedom can be a heart-wrenching and exhilarating experience.
But Van must have strategically placed this room here. With that in mind, I tell everyone the value of this keep.
"This top floor is called the keep. The entire fortress is designed as a staircase that follows the slope of the hill. In other words, the walls and gates on the Jiernetta side are at the lowest point, the turrets in front of them, the keep of the small castle next, the second small castle after that, the third small castle after that... and the highest point is the keep. One of the key elements is that each castle is built so that it can fight its own defense, but it is also an important defense mechanism that allows the castle to be constantly on the lookout for its surroundings from outside the castle walls and turrets. And..."
As he explains, he moves to the edge of the terrace and places his hand on the railing before pointing to the end of the street.
"If the ballista is set up one floor below, it will have range to the middle of the street that you can see from here... that area."
When he said this, there was a groan. Looking back, everyone was astonished to see the road they had just pointed to.
"My goodness...!"
"That's a threat from someone attacking this fortress, isn't it?"
Many voiced their surprise. That would be true. Even Van, the creator of the ballista, was surprised at the distance it could fly. The aim is less precise, but it is still more than enough of a threat.
This is noticed more strongly by powerful magicians, who are usually in a position to dominate the battlefield.
"So much has been built up, and they were still trying to make some kind of contraption? I wonder what they are trying to make."
His Majesty expressed such a thought with a smile on his face. To which Venturi pulls his chin with an expression as if contemplating something.
"...Hmm. The new weapon of Jiernetta... can it be used against it?"
"As far as Van said, if it is as accurate as it is now, there is no problem. The hit rate is low to begin with, but it seems that if the range is increased, the hit rate will be even lower. He said that even if it were to reach from that area, it would be good enough if it hit somewhere in this fortress."
When I told them what Van had told me, His Majesty and Venturi were easily convinced.
"I see."
"Then there is no problem. If the other party knows the defenses of this fortress, we'll seek other means than a straightforward attack. It will depend on how much we can think of any loopholes."
Perhaps because Van had done the most research on the black jade, he seemed to have gained considerable trust from His Majesty and Venturi.
While the other nobles were still discussing the matter, I saw some of the other nobles who had arrived late also come up to the keep.
Among them, there was a familiar face I hadn't seen in a year.
"...Brother?"
Gallardo and Sesto, widened their eyes, raised such a voice when they saw me.
