This was canon. Sorry it was boring but its not technically filler.

Let me try to explain. Filler in anime terms is episodes made by the studio to fill in time while the manga goes forward. The creator of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, created the story in the manga. the anime is simply just an animation studio findging voice actors and animating what Masashi wrote in the manga. Kishimoto has nothing to do with the anime besides creating the story that the studio is adapting. He didn't create the anime, just the manga which the anime is adapted on. The Naruto anime catches up with the manga sometimes when Masashi takes breaks writing because the anime was released weekly and rarely goes on break: so the studio would take it upon themselves to create their OWN episodes with original stories and content to fill in time and space while they waited for Kishimoto to have a sizeable lead with the manga ahead of the anime, then they would get back to the original story. This episode is actually something in the manga that Kishimoto wrote that wasn't created by the animation studio, therefore it is technically not filler.

Thanks for clearing that up Chi! Aye, then why can't the studio make characters fight in epic fashion rather then have them sitting by a lake or climbing a mountain for 30 episodes of filler?
