Peter Mullen is still working on the art banner we funded with the last goal, but I've just added the next.  When we hit $750 I will do a full Questing Beast review of ALL THREE D&D 5E CORE BOOKS. I've avoided doing this for a while due to wanting to focus as much attention as I can on new OSR stuff, but people keep asking for it, and I feel it would be useful to compare it to all the indie stuff coming out, both in terms of design and content.

I think this is a worthy goal. I would welcome a Questing Beast review of the 3 core 5e books and anticipate your perspective on them to be very interesting.

I think comparing WoTC stuff to the way way things are designed in the OSR is a great idea!

My expectation is that you will draw attention to the design and layout problems within the handbook, including the difficulty in making a character - having to make 1000 choices before you know how to play the game. Neckbeards that love 5e will take any opportunity to criticise your work, in the typical hysteria of internet communities. i love 5e, but I don't like the 5e online communities. I would be very careful before wading into that arena

Totally agree with this. I love that Questing Beast sorta sticks to the OSR stuff that interests me.

Generally, people who watch QB’s videos understand the OSR-focus of Ben’s YouTube channel. You will always find a few snarky comments and hyper-critical people in any online forum, but you would end up saying nothing at all if you sat around worrying about these individuals (and I am not condoning being intentionally rude/obnoxious just to provoke people). Based on Ben’s videos and online comments and his vocation as a teacher, I believe he is very comfortable with differing viewpoints and he can handle the occasional sharp criticism. So, I would not worry. People need to remember that it is a game! It should be about building community while having fun and being creative. Yes, every community will have some disagreements, and that is not a bad thing. They should be handled tactfully and respectfully, and approached as opportunities to learn and grow.

"Yes, every community will have some disagreements, and that is not a bad thing. They should be handled tactfully and respectfully, and approached as opportunities to learn and grow." All of the OSR threads in the dnd subreddits turn into OSR v 5E and are toxic as fuck. I am not saying that as a criticism of either side, it's just what generally happens. i would prefer to see the follow-up video of "Can you use 5E to play an OSR style of game?" I think the answer is yes, and is the bridge between the communities.

I'm not going to be bashing on 5e as a system much if we hit that goal. I've played quite a lot of 5e and it's a perfectly good system if you really strip it down. I know that Zak S pretty much only uses it for his games, so you can definitely play it OSR-style if you want. Most of my criticisms are bad book design and a lack of really original, exciting content. Also the covers are SO BORING.

Neckbeards are just plain toxic people. Their combination of low self esteem and cringey arrogance is really offputting.

Good idea, hope to see the goal reached soon.
