On this episode I'm joined by Andrew Allen to discuss the tense 1-0 win over Wolves at Molineux on Thursday night. We chat about the goal we scored, the role of set-pieces as an attacking threat, the extraordinary red card for Gabriel Martinelli and the crazy few minutes that followed it. As well as focus on the defensive effort, Rob Holding's clearance cameo, what we can do about our disciplinary issues, the celebration police, and what was a very important win in difficult circumstances. All that and more.

Are we actually committing more egregious challenges than say Burnley are? No. Was any challenge in the game worse than Ruben Diaz's challenge on Odegaard? No. Were there similiar challenges to Martinelli's in the game that avoided bookings? Yes. I think the reason we suffer disproportionally from the referee is because we try to create an intensity in our games that often works against us. Our players dont have, in some cases, the experience or, in other cases, the sense to avoid being dragged into the intensity of the game that we seek to cultivate in order to frustrate opposition. Martinelli was a victim of that last night. He acted in frustration in both challenges that saw him booked when in fact he was attempting to frustrate the Wolves players. What exacerbates the situation is that referees are also influenced by this intensity even though they shouldnt be either. Martinelli didnt make any significant challenges prior to those that saw him booked. So if Oliver were to extend the benefit of the doubt that he gave to others to Martinelli he would have stayed on the field. However, Oliver was frustrated by Arsenal's collective timewasting and, as he saw it, petulance. He allowed the actions of other Arsenal players, and the Wolves sense of injustice, to influence his decision to send off Martinelli.

The time wasting point is an important one. The time wasting on throws and by Ramsdale on goal kicks seems to annoy the EPL referees. They don't want to give a yellow that early for time wasting so they give yellows (and reds) for everything else. I'd be interested to see what happens if Arensel plays faster and changes the amount of time spent on throw -ins and goal kicks

Peter Bain is spot on. Referee allowed the actions of other players to influence him to create a bizarre decision. But hey, who cares. We won! And are now in a position where it’s all to play for. The only comment that I would make is Saka seemed anonymous. As well as I felt Cedric played, at least in the first half, Bukayo misses Tomiyasu.

We care because this is not a template for continued success. If we continue to get treated in this way we will drop points more often than not.

The Celebration Police....classic!

It’s important to remember that people’s reactions are a reflection of their own state of mind and perspectives. Neves pointed out how we celebrated because he wanted to make himself and his team feel that they had done well in the game, so well that they pushed us to the point of crazed celebration. That’s fine. He can make himself feel better with his comments. It’s the same as the negativity around some arsenal “fans”. They are obviously having a tough moment in life and so will always be seeing a decent performance as a failure in some respects or Arteta / Edu / whoever out because they have failed in some imaginary way… I’m not trying to be Zen but it makes it a lot more enjoyable if you don’t get bogged down with other peoples’ Arsenal agendas… ✌🏻
