What do you write to get people in the holiday spirit during a worldwide crisis? Maybe this. William P both commissioned this song, and wrote the lyrics for it. I enjoyed building up a chorale around the melody, and hopefully struck some of the american golden age style songwriting I was going for.

Please stay safe this winter.

Stay Safe For Me - Lyrics by William P.

A Bm7  A/C#

This year has been so long now

D Dm A

what was months can feel like years

F# F#/A# Bm

The gap maintained between us

A/C#  E/B E

yet unshared joys and tears

A   Bm7  A/C#

The days are getting shorter

D Dm C#7

yet I miss you ever more

F#m A/E  D A/C#

The wind feels ever colder

   D/B E7  A(sus) A

my empty arms forlorn

Chorus:

A   A/C#  D D/F#

For now stay safe for me

B  B7/D# E E/D

I'll do the same for you

C#7 C#7/F F#m B7/D#

and I will see you soon

  DM7 DM7/E   A

shining smile in plain view

Family, friends, all distanced

All are precious in our minds

every day keeps us worried

we’ve said our last goodbye

Before this year had started

Who ever could have thought

That six feet kept between us

could slowly break our hearts

-

video calls connect us

they have been a saving grace

the screens feel so much lesser

than times when we’re face to face

This year I cannot hug you

though it tears my soul apart

I wish that I could be there

though for now we stay apart

-- chorus --

The things we thought we needed

wealth and towers in the sky

are each but distant memories

It’s hard enough getting by

the store shelves may be empty

"essentials" all long gone

nothing I can buy you

so instead I wrote this song

-

right now we're all just waiting

for these distanced times to end

so we can be together

with family and with friends

For now we practice patience

That day is getting near

when we can both be close again

and we can both be here

--chorus --
