Chapter 11

In the car, dad drove home, mom was in the passenger seat and Johnny was in the child safety seat in the back.

“What are we going to do?”

“There isn't anything wrong with Gracie. They'll eventually say so and send her home. Probably tomorrow.”

“But, Gracie says she's a little girl. They'll know something is wrong.”

“When she's awake, we'll tell her to stop saying that. She'll listen to me. She says she is Johnny. I guess I should have told her to say she is 14 and a boy too.”

“What about me?” Johnny complained.

“What about you.”

“I don't want to be Gracie.”

“You're stuck. Do you want us to send you to school like this?”

“No.”

“Then just wait it out. It won't take long.”

“Do I have to do the commercial thing?”

“I guess not. But $100,000 for a few weeks would be a great addition to your college fund.”

“College is not for four years.”

“Sooner than you think. You would also become famous. You'd be the brother of a child star!”

“Great,” Johnny mumbled sarcastically.

It was hard for Johnny to play his video games. With a body so short and arms and fingers so stubby, he couldn't manipulate the mouse very easily.

“Get ready to go to bed,” mom told Johnny at his usual bedtime.

“OK.”

Johnny picked out a pair of Gracie's pajamas to wear. He found a pair that wasn't too girlie. It was a white Toy Story pajama that featured Woody and Buzz Lightyear. He picked up a pair of pull-ups to take with him to the bathroom. They were the only underwear that fit his new body. He threw the leotard and tutu into the hamper and the diaper he was wearing into the trash. He walked into the shower and turned the water on. Even though he looked like a two-year-old, he was still fourteen in his mind and could take a shower alone. He washed himself off quickly. After the shower, he dried himself off, dressed for bedtime, brushed his teeth and hair, and walked to his room.

“Hey, you're sleeping in Gracie's room tonight.”

“Why?”

“You just are.”

“Fine.”

Early the next morning, mom got a message from the agent.

<my sponsor really wants your daughter in our commercials. He let me know I can offer $150,000 for two weeks of work. Let us know.>

Mom sent back a response.

<What will Gracie have to do exactly>

“She'll be wearing a diaper and just walking like a toddler half her age>

<She knows how to walk>

<We know what to do. We'll put her in a really thick diaper. She takes direction better than any other girl her age. I might be able to get you even more than $150,000>

<Let me think about it. We have other concerns at the moment>

<Yes, your son. How is he doing?>

<He's still in the hospital> mom didn't want to be too specific.

<I hope he gets better>

<Thank you>

Even though $150,000 was a lot of money, mom had a sense that they would offer more. Maybe even half a million dollars. That would pay for Johnny's college education...and Gracie's too. All that Johnny would have to do is wear diapers for a couple of weeks and walk funny.

“Mom, what's for breakfast.”

“Anything you want? You want waffles?”

“Yeah sure.”

“Johnny, I have great news for you.”

“What?”

“You are going to be in commercials!”

“I told you I didn't...”

“I know, but this offer is too good to pass up. It'll be easy and it'll only last two weeks.”

“You want me to be Gracie for two weeks?”

“If you do it, I'll get you a car when you are old enough to drive, a BMW. Everyone will want to be your friend when you show up in a car like that.”

It took some effort, but eventually, Johnny was convinced. He couldn't lose. Not like he would be embarrassing himself. It was technically his sister who would be in the commercial.

“There's just one thing.”

“One thing?”

“Yeah, it's a diaper commercial. The part you will be playing is a baby younger than Gracie. You will be in a diaper and acting like a baby. I'm going to get you some extra thick diapers and I'm going to teach you how to walk like a baby.”

“Learn to walk like a baby?”

“Babies are just learning. They walk differently. Let's look at some videos.”

Mom picked Johnny up and carried him to her computer. She put him in her lap and opened the browser. In the YouTube search, mom entered “toddler walk”. A list of videos of toddlers walking appeared. Mom found a video called stages of walking. It was only two minutes and fourteen seconds long. “Let's watch this.”

“Look how far apart his legs are. Look at how he uses his hands to keep balance?”

“I see.”

“Look how he falls on his butt mostly. If he falls forward, it turns into a crawl?”

“I see.”

“OK, now let's look at another video.”

This time it was a girl who was learning to walk. “See how she is doing it?”

“Yes.”

OK, now I want you to try. Legs wide, arms out, a few shaky steps, then fall on your backside.”

Mom put Johnny on the floor in a sitting position. She wanted him to stand and then walk a few steps and fall on his butt. Johnny tried to remember how the babies did it.

He bent over into a crawling position. He spread his feet apart. He tried to push himself up into a standing position. He took one 'shaky' step after the other. Then he let his butt slip out behind him and fall to the ground.

“That's a good start. Try again.”

After a while, Johnny asked, “How long do I have to do this?”

“I'm going to keep you in diapers, and you will be practicing walking until the commercial is over. If you aren't practicing walking, I'll roll you around in the stroller or carry you. It's called method acting.”

“In diapers? You want me to go in diapers all the time?”

“It's a diaper commercial. You should get used to them. But it's only for a couple of weeks. You'll thank me when all your friends see you in a new expensive car.”
